A slightly different shot from the one they used on John Keating's "Space Experience" LP sleeve.

Many years ago there was an Astronaut autograph show in the Meadowlands at the Crowne Plaza. I had Rusty Schweikert of Apollo 9 sign this photo. I asked him what he was standing on. Was it the porch on the LM? He said, 'Nothing. I was just floating there.' Cool.

Then there was this photo of Alan Bean on Apollo 12 standing next to Surveyor 3 which had landed there 18 months earlier on April 20, 1967. Lunar Module in the background. Talk about a pin point landing. Hot damn.

Quality is phenomenal on these. Kudos to NASA for uploading in high-res.

All of these just help make the space program feel so intimate and real. When you think it was just a small group of fighter pilots being flung to another celestial body in a janky, tin-foil rapped craft smaller than a Manhattan studio apartment...it's just incredible.

And despite it not being all that far away, we haven't been back in 40 years.

Curious if any scientific data [ metallurgy breakdown] the exposure of the crafts sitting on the lunar surface the past 40 years?

I can't find the reference but I read that kapton foil which covered the descent stage has probably deteriorated by now. The flags erected on the surface, if they are still attached, are probably bleached white if the nylon hasn't also disintegrated by now. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter took photos of all of the landing sites that show five of the six flag poles still standing, confirming Buzz Aldrin's assertion that he saw the flag planted by him and Neil Armstrong topple over by the engine blast as they lifted off from the moon.

Saw all these the other day. Pretty amazing.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Gene Cernan (the last man on the moon) years ago. I was on a layover in Dallas and he was doing a book signing and I just happened to be in the shop at the right time. There weren't a lot of people there and he spent about 10 minutes talking to me about pilot stuff. He was as much interested in what I was flying, and had flown, as I was in his career. It's a great memory for me. It's hard to believe we haven't been back to the moon since 1972. Not to mention Mars.

    Great photos.

Our space program has been a huge disappointment to me. I was just a young kid back then but I thought the future looked great and it never happened.

All the photos are available on Flickr in full resolution, unretouched/edited/etc.: https://www.flickr.com/photos/projectapolloarchive/albums Absolutely amazing that we get all this stuff for free... though I guess you can look at as all US citizens own them since our taxes paid for them.
