Their is 2 virtually unspoken of lost classics from the 1970s that have that decades most melodic songs on them...

Dion DiMucci back up singers in the 50s the Belmonts released Cigars Accapella Candy in 1972...

On it they cover everything from 50s & 60s hits through George Harrison My Sweet Lord...

This is a must hear / have for anybody even vaguely interested in
    harmony & melody...

    A lost 1970s classic...heavenly sounds indeed

My other suggestion is also accapella performances from wizards of the genre..

1977 saw the Persausions release their finest effort Chirpin...

Not only does the record explore the whole history of rocknroll but also has some more of the 1970s most melodic & harmonious sounds performed Accapella...

Come to think of it these 2 records contain some of any decades or genre greatest melodies & harmonies...

Both records are essential listening &

Both are heavenly sounds from above

One other great LP comes to mind...

Again another lost classic being Billy Swans s/t 1976 album...

On this his 3rd and most consistent effort Swan was joined by Carl "Blue Suede Shoes" Perkins & the Jordanaires (yes those guys)...

Every song is full of hooks harmony & melody...oh and rocknroll

Swans influences ranged from Sun , the 60s , C&W & even a little Beatles thrown in the mix...

Great harmonies & melodies are found along with great performances on this masterpiece...

Swan would never be this consistently good again...

Well there are my picks for great melodic efforts from the 1970s

Great song! One of my favorite singers, yet, I didn't know it. Thanks!

And no-one has mentioned David Gates and Bread as yet.

Many of David Gates' songs are fantastic melodies and his very musical and melodic vocals are the icing on the cake.

"Make It With You". "If". "Diary." "Baby I'm A Want You." "It Don't Matter To Me." "Lost Without Your Love". "Clouds Suite." "Goodbye Girl." "Part Time Love." "Guitar Man." "Everything I Own."

    Melody overload!

True. Those are the ones people think of....but my all-time favorites are Dismal Day, and Friends and Lovers.

I was also thinking about Bread, so was going through the thread and found your post at the end of my search.
David Gates did write good melodies.

Ditto also Bjorn and Benny of ABBA.
