Who Can Stand In The Way The start of this song reminds me of Robert Fripp Water Music, that was used as the intro to Peter Gabriel's Here Comes The Flood on the exposure album. Unfortunately then i cringe a little as the keyboard sample kicks in, in that double stab that was so popular in the eighties. This is a really good song, but for me at least that continuing keyboard stab used as punctuation mark throughout the song dates in badly and spoils my enjoyment of it. There is a nice little bluegrass kind of breakdown at the end of the song. Lyrics Well oh well I feel I'm in decay John Laws is on the air again It's heavy traffic, jacarandas, eye in the sky and foot on ground I see a million sand speck'd ants in mortal combat hand to hand And I feel that I Yes I feel that I Seem to live this life long distance Gaze at the things surround me People rolling in and out Those circles and tides confound me And there's just one thing Yes there's just one thing Who can stand in the way When there's a dollar to be made? I was hanging round off Dobroyd Point When the first fleet chain sailed in Looked into the clearest blue The scurvy smell, the convicts cry And we just carried on, Yes we just carried on Now choppers strafe the supermarket sky And people wonder why Chopping down tons of trees Got seas of print not a soul can read say Why do I drown you build brick boxes One by one now they block my sun But it's metal on metal It's the dance of TV If Christ were here he'd camera check He'd cry so loud the planes would stop He'd cry so loud the earth would shake And men would fall in tinsel town There's just one thing Yes there's just one thing... Who can stand in the way When there's a dollar to be made? Precious moments, precious few When that dollar's more than me and you It's the joy of forgetting, Such a joy to forget But we killed all our firstborn And we slashed and we burned And we sold off the paddocks And we raped and we gouged On the wings of a six-pack Will we ever learn?
Kosciusko A nice acoustic intro that leads into some power chords. This is a great song with Rob Hirst taking the main lead vocal again. Lyrics Older than Kosciuszko Darwin down to Alice Springs Dealers in the clearinghouse The settlements explode High up in the homelands Miners drive across the land Encounter no resistance When the people block the road Older than Kosciuszko Dry white seasons years ago Darkness over Charleville The fires begin to grow No end to the hostility Now they want to be somewhere else No stranger to brutality Now they'd like to be someone else Older than Kosciuszko Driven back to Alice Springs Endless storm and struggle Marks the spirit of the age High up in the homelands Celebration 'cross the land Builds up like a cyclone Now the fires begin to rage Call off the ultimatum No don't turn away Call off the ultimatum until yesterday Call off the ultimatum No don't turn away Bind up the brokenhearted No don't turn away Call off the ultimatum until yesterday
this is the song that turned me on to the band. Local radio station (kroq) played it all the time... bought this album, and dug the band ever since...
Helps me Helps you This song starts with some distant chanting of a sort and then a didgeridoo starts up. This is an uptempo acoustic number and is quite effective as a song and in its message. Lyrics Look at all the toys I got Look at all the things I need Look at all the toys I got Look at all the mouths I feed Have I got a wonderful deal for you What belongs to me belongs to you I understand what you're going through I know the point to push you to My policy helps me helps you Generosity helps me helps you Conspiracy helps me helps you Put you trust in me I'll help you too Look at all the things I've done Look at all the rights I wrong The means will justify the end For you to save and me to spend 'cause I've got a great idea you see What belongs to you belongs to me I know just what you want to do I know how I can get there too Hypocrisy helps me helps you Democracy helps me helps you Ideology helps me helps you Put your trust in me I'll help you through
Harrisburg This track starts of with an eerie breath that ends up being used as a beat for the song, and it is quite effective. This song is based around the Three Mile Island incident near Harrisburg in Pennsylvania. It is an eerie synth backed track. Lyrics The empire rings The umpire's not laughing The President's resented, The Ambassador's a night club You cannot get it out It's stuff you cannot taste or see It's stuff you cannot smell It's stuff that's twenty times as hot As the hottest stuff in hell Harrisburg, oh Harrisburg The plant is melting down The people out in Harrisburg Are getting out of town And when the stuff gets in You cannot get it out The company said it would not blow The Government said it might Harrisburg, Oh Harrisburg I wonder who was right Who can leave it behind, The curtains are drawn There's something I must say to you You cannot get it out
The recorded sound of this album is so atrocious, is there any payoff in seeking different masterings? I have the original US vinyl.
My cd is fine, but i guess it would depend on what we are referring to as atrocious. If you find digital harsh, it was a digital recording....
Friday 3:45 long weekend... Midnight Oil - Red Sails In The Sunset CBS Australia 1984 Bilbo Tape One London DOCO DESTA MR ICECREAMU ICECREAMU U SAN DOKU DESUKA ? Recorded and mixed in Tokyo...
My Aussie is outstanding, probably cut from UK metal - Bilbo Tape One London so the UK would be great as well
Bells And Horns In The Back Of Beyond Driven by some atmospheric keys and a glockenspiel? at first. Then about half way through a frantic beat and some part surf rock, part james bond theme guitars jump in. As strange as it sounds, it actually works. Lyrics The Southern Aurora was late again As I waited at central to take you home Winking spinning sparkling lights on our flat earth You talk about the old groundling ways Where the suburbs summer pulse and play in wrinkled sand and never never never neverland I get home I see them drive down I look out and see those lines and lines and lines of swell and smiles Coolangatta, what's the matter? Paradise, it's a surfer's world and flashing lights and real estate With one last wave Ahhh, get up and run 'Cause there's a beach lies quiet near the open sea And a carpark lay streched where the bindis used to be When will I be yours When will I be mine
Shipyards Of New Zealand Some atmospheric keyboards again start this song, with some part groan, part backing vocals coming in mixed fairly low, with the vocal starting over the top of this. At about a minute and a half in the song kicks in proper, and then at about 2:10 we revert to the opening theme. This is a good song, and works well even though it has a somewhat unusual structure. Lyrics Thought one day I'd make my fortune Like the ancient cavalcades From the shipyards of New Zealand Chasing history I left home Moving west into the sunset Became the sunset of our lives I was factory made and settled Safe from storm and broken earth There's so much to do every day Dreams keep on disappearing We cling to the walls of our heart Keeps us from coming undone Now danger lurks behind the spreader And Charlton Heston casts the first stone User interference birthmarks Clever, not very wise Let the lamp lights keep on shining now While those searchlights in skies they are turning We climb to the top of the heap I wish I could fly I can't get lost I can't get confused Something's misplaced Maybe for good
So that is Red Sails In The Sunset. I think a very good follow up to one of the albums of the eighties in 10-1. Let us know your thoughts. The next installment will be the essential, Oils on water. Or is that Essential Oils, on water ? .....
yea mate, definitely. great e.p. .... probably where the last big release from them for me ... i like the other stuff, but they started to lose me after species.
I love Red Sails but it took me many years of listening to the Oils to fully appreciate it, and I'm still hearing new things in it. Would be great if the band did a documentary with Nick Launay about its production, like the excellent one they produced about 10-1 in last year's "Overflow Tank."
Oils On Water - Live at Goat island 1985 In January 1985, Midnight Oil performed Oils on the Water, a concert on Goat Island in Sydney Harbour to celebrate Triple J's tenth birthday,[3] before a select audience of fans who had won tickets in a radio competition. The concert was filmed, simulcast on ABC-TV and Triple J, and released on video,[3] which was remastered for their 2004 Best of Both Worlds DVD. I saw this concert as aired with the then state of the art stereo cast on the relatively new stereo radio format. Triple J was Australia's nationwide alternative radio station and for many years I found some of my favourite acts through them. This show converted me to being a Midnight Oil fan. I had heard some songs and seen some videos, but I hadn't bought any of their albums. After seeing this I bought 10-1 and was certainly not disappointed. I reckon the folks who won the tickets to this show probably treasure the memory of seeing this one off special, close to the band performance, and the band certainly seemed to be having a great time. If you haven't listened to any of the songs, if you haven't really been paying much attention, then I highly recommend giving this a watch ... and I also highly recommend getting the "Best Of Both Worlds" DVD, It also has "A Night at the Capitol Theater" from 1982 another well filmed concert, this concert was also linked to triple j. If you know someone that you think would like this - tag them.
