It's not one of my favorites from the album, but it has grown on me. Especially after I realized that I wasn't paying enough attention to the lyrics and had misinterpreted what was meant with the chorus lyrics. Still, musically it's not as good as the best songs on Redneck Wonderland.

    What Goes On
Another heavily effected song. I keep coming back to the same conclusion with this album. The band were looking for a return to the experimental nature of 10-1, but there experiments are more involved with technology and production than song structure.
Another decent song, and there is definitely a return to a more hard edged rock, but that rock in buried beneath a barrage of synthetic sounds, which isn't in itself a bad thing, it is just so much of it that it seems to drown the songs it is trying to enhance.

    Drop in the Ocean
Predominantly a piano and Garrett's forced whisper vocal. This is a song that pulls back from the heavily synthesized and produced songs that make up the bulk of the songs here. It works reasonably well.

I don't know what they were doing with the microphones during the recording of this album, but on many of the songs it does not even sound recognisably like Garrett's voice. Strange.

A lot of songs seem to have some extremely close mic'd, quiet vocals, and that often gives the voice a different sounding timbre

    Capricornia
    [IMG]
    Studio album by Midnight Oil
    Released
    19 February 2002
    Recorded 2000–2001
    Sydney
    Genre Rock
Length 41:17 (Australian version), 45:49 (US version)
Label Sprint Music / Sony (Australia) / Liquid8 (International)
    Producer Warne Livesey

Capricornia is an album by Midnight Oil that was released in 2002 under the Sony Music label in Australia, and the Liquid 8 record label internationally. Capricornia is the band's last studio album to date.

On the two previous albums Breathe (1996) and Redneck Wonderland (1998), all tracks were credited “Midnight Oil”; on Capricornia the band returns to crediting individual contributors for each track, with Moginie dominating the list as is seen on most of their records.

After the hard rock/industrial electronic sounds of the previous album Redneck Wonderland, on this record Midnight Oil moved to a stripped back sound, with acoustic and clean electric guitars dominating the sound of the album (Golden Age, Luritja Way, Under the Overpass), although some tracks (Too Much Sunshine, Mosquito March, Poets and Slaves) feature significant distorted guitars. These latter tracks also feature distorted vocals. The album also features a short piano solo track (A Crocodile Cries) in the middle of the record, the melody of which is reprised for the album closing Poets and Slaves.

The album was produced, mixed and arranged by Warne Livesey, who also worked on Midnight Oil's seminal Diesel and Dust and Blue Sky Mining records. The bonus track Say Your Prayers, which appears on US versions of the album and was one of the four new tracks on The Real Thing, was produced by the band and Daniel Denholm.

The name and concept of Capricornia was taken from the novel of the same name written by the Australian author Xavier Herbert. The name Capricornia refers to part of the Queensland coast and inland region around Rockhampton, which is close to the Tropic of Capricorn.

The album was issued in a digipak case, first released in 2001; the U.S. release date was 19 February 2002.[2] By this time, the band had already begun playing a few gigs in America. A callout label on the original US version sealed album correctly but somewhat confusingly states there are 11 new tracks (there are 12 tracks in all but only 11 were new; Say Your Prayers was issued on The Real Thing not very long before) and also states that the album contains "Golden Age" and "Too Much Sunshine," the initial singles. "Mosquito March," the third single, was not released at the time. Another single, Luritja Way, was issued at a later date. (picture of sealed CD)

A DTS version was released in 2002, still before the last two singles for the album.

The European edition contained two bonus tracks, a cover of "Pub with no beer" and "Kiss that Girl". The latter is the last all-new song the band released. To date, the European version of Capricornia remains the only official release to contain this song.

The last album in the Midnight Oil catalog is one I do not have and have not heard at all. So if you are familiar with it, please poke your head in and give us a run down of what we have here.
    Cheers

I am still trying to get my head around Midnight Oil doing a song called "Kiss That Girl". This is the same bad that was noted for avoiding the time-honoured rock themes of falling in and out of love, preferring to sing about nuclear proliferation, environmental vandalism and the rights of indigenous Australians?

    Golden Age
This is a great track. Starting with a guitar riff that has a sound like the Byrds, we have a song that sounds more in line with the Midnight Oil everyone is used to. A nice opening to a dairly ignored album ... it seems.

    Too Much Sunshine
We move into something a little more rocky for the second track. It's a good song, it doesn't make me excited or draw me in the way past Oil's songs did, but it is certainly not a bad track.

I believe that by the time of this album's release quite a lot of people had tuned out, having got turned off by the previous two albums. That's a shame, because my impression is that this album is quite a lot closer in style to the ones that are considered their "claassic" albums, especially D&D and BSM.

    Luritja Way
This song also has a semi country pop sound and seems to reflect the Dead Heart a little.

On this album the Oils sound almost more like Hunters & Collectors than Hunters & Collectors do.

I think Capricornia is a return to form after The Oils lost the plot with Breathe and Redneck Wonderland. Those albums always felt to me like they were following trends instead of blazing their own trail as usual. Not to say that Capricornia ranks up there with their best, but it certainly was a breath of fresh air at the time.

Listening to the tracks you’ve posted from Capricornia I’m realizing that I never gave this album a good listen. I’ve had it on CD for years but I’m thinking life got a little busy for me in the early 2000s and I put it off, along with a lot of other albums. I need to pull this one out and keep it in the player for a bit.

Thanks for running through the Midnight Oil catalogue Mark. It moved a little too fast for me to contribute but I’ve enjoyed dropping in and reading the posts.:thumbsup:

It's never too late to contribute mate.
To me any album thread i do is about getting the songs and albums up for people to check out. Hopefully people unfamiliar will try some stuff out.
Also hopefully the fans at anytime will give us their heart on anything here :)

Capricornia is a bit of a "return to form" as others have said. It's definitely superior to Breathe and quite possibly Redneck Wonderland, too.

The European version is definitely best too. Two more songs, and no repeat of the already released Say Your Prayers (a bizarre thing to do, putting that on the US version).

So yeah, a very good album, better than the previous two, but not matching the glorious run of albums before that.

    Tone Poem
A moderate tempo song with a back and forth chord pattern, sets a nice groove, with some highlighted lead work from the guitar. A good song that works well.

This is a nice piece of Piano with some nature sound effects floating through it, essentially working as a ling track or a distraction.

    Under The Overpass
A nice earthy old sounding acoustic guitar starts this off, then after the first round we move into more typical Oils instrumentation. This is a pretty decent song and I am finding this album to be better than expected, but still not in the league of the 10-1 diesel and dust era.

    World That I See
Again a gentle start that begins to pulse somewhat. Then we move into a more typical Oils sound. I kind of feel the Oils weren't really sure where to go at this time. They had tried to step into the new age on Redneck Wonderland, with mixed results. Here we seem to have the band reverting to somewhat of a Blue Sky Mining feel, but without the sort of resolve they had back then.
