All that money spent and he won't even invest in quality shelving.

This is why I like my iTunes library– I keep adding titles and the size of the Apple TV stays the same.

$1 per title sounds right. If you sell these individually however....

Free shipping! Might be a large package though.

Although, if Apple loses the rights to those movies or shows... pfffft! It's gone!

This is a gross underestimation. You can clearly see quality box sets worth money. The set would probably get several hundred thousand....but not a million.

  8. Used DVDs go for less than £1 in UK. Unless he has some rare or hard to find titles I think he will have to settle for a much lower price.

Should have collected vinyl rather than films it seems.

Unless he is prepared to do a hell of a lot of work and sell the OOP titles one by one on eBay then I would think no-one is going to give him more than $2 a title for the whole lot. He will be lucky to get $40,000 I would think.

The problem with selling large collections for hundreds of thousands of $ is that very few people have so much money and even fewer want to deal with such a large collection all at once. If he sold the 100 rarest items he might get several thousand dollars for them. Selling large collections en gros is tough business.

Only a library or a video rental store (if any still exist), would buy all of them.

  12. Exactly, I can just imagine someone going to a bank for a loan for a few hundred thousand dollars in order to buy a large Blu-ray/DVD/VHS collection. The look on the bank employee's face would be priceless though.

Yes it would obviously take effort and time.

I am commenting on the truth of the matter. Getting there is not going to be a cake walk!

Though GIVE it to me and I would be happy to do it.

Well technically I download the films I care about. Has anyone actually lost the ability to view their purchased films in iTunes, though? I'm not counting the numbskull that moved to Canada and then cried foul when it was a region issue.

I suppose the biggest risk would be where the company selling the content was found to not have the legal rights to sell it on iTunes.

I have the exact same feeling whenever I see an enormous record collection. There's a big difference between getting stuff you like and enjoy and buying every darned thing under the sun. I'd also like to point out the fairly significant gap between the money you get for sealed box sets, Criterions etc. and open ones even if you were selling them one by one...

Not many people take out loans in order to partake in their hobby. Anyone borrowing money to buy this collection will be in the business of reselling. And trade prices are always lower than retail. Maybe $50,000 the lot.

nahhh its weighed down by a ton of generic titles and 3K of these being vhs tapes, essentially worthless unless something super rare, he should at last do these separately, one lot 3-d blu-ray etc, in 1990 however?

Local store here had used CD/DVD sale, 100 pieces for $25. They had a similar one for their vinyl as well.
