Could anyone recommend some modern bands that sound like the Monkees?

That would be nada. However, I’ve always felt that the BNL embody the Monkees general spirit.

The Monkees recordings are/were pretty diverse and covered a lot of ground: I don't think there's any one band today that's quite as varied in style.

My pick would be NRBQ, who have been around for just about as long as the Monkees. During their prime years from 1972-'94 or so, they put out some very diverse albums. You have Big Al Anderson doing country and blues influenced music, Joey Spampinato with the pop songs and ballads, Terry Adams doing the jazzy, poppy, bluesy, sometimes wacky songs, and Tom Ardolino who rarely got a chance to sing but sure knew how to play. Sound familiar? I watched the Monkees when I was a kid in the '60's and then forgot about them for 40 yrs. In '78 I discovered the Q and became a huge fan which made it very easy for me to love the Monkees music when I rediscovered them in 2011.

They tried desperately to make the Jonas Brothers into The Monkees.

Believe it or not Pete Best's band has a couple of songs that are very Monkees like.

I always thought that this is the best Davy Jones Monkees song that isn't a Davy Jones Monkees song. :D

I can picture him singing it.

I think Fountains of Wayne would scratch a Monkees itch.

I read that Steven Spielberg once wanted to create a Monkee-type series around the British band Supergrass. The band turned him down which was a wise choice.

I still have a bunch of my bands CD's in the garage. :D We even had multiple lead singers; and we all loved the Monkees....especially in our youth.

The Monkees had three diverse lead singers, two that scored number 1 hits with their voices. Their songs ranged from early country rock, pop, a little psychedelic, humorous numbers, love songs, nostalgic sounding tracks, show tunes, protest songs.
The Monkees had a guy that wrote songs that were covered by Hall of Famer's like Linda, Run DMC; blues legends, country legends, legendary crooners like Andy Williams and so on.
the Monkees scored hit after hit all over the world and their popularity in places like Australia, Japan and Canada extended even beyond in the US. As mentioned in other posts - three of their members had recording contracts/released records before the Monkees were formed.
As far as answering the question. I think you go straight to the writers who have contributed to Good Times - Gibbard, Partridge, Cuomo, Schlesinger and if you loved "Accidental Hipster" maybe check out Noel Gallagher and Peter Weller. That may be as close as you get.

The Archies or 1910 Fruit Gum Co. should fit the bill.
