Ah, excellent. I'll put it in. Thanks.
I have most of the Billboard/Release dates in now.
    The list is remarkably consistent.

This will really help when we have LP's of unknown dates.
I should have worked on this years ago!

Frank, thanks for putting all this together!

I am surprised that more people haven't contributed some data. We have some big time collectors here on the West Coast who surely have hundreds of Monarch pressed LPs from all eras.

I now have 140 LP's on the list, but the years before 1963 are somewhat sparse.
If only I had west-coast copies of the Sun LP's.

Pre-1962, most mono LP's pressed by Monarch were in styrene, while vinyl was used for stereo only. It was when A&M Records first hit on the scene in '62 that Monarch started going with vinyl only for all LP pressings - and their pressings of same began to pick up.

Monarch lasted right up to 1986, when by-then parent ElectroSound shut down the plant and consolidated all its LP and 45 pressings to their Shelbyville, IN plant. That would be the cutoff point of any delta numbers.

Ah, terrific. I had seen copies of certain LP's on eBay -- ones that were clearly Monarch pressings -- but I felt bad asking the sellers for that detail, since I had no intention of buying the records. Supertramp was one of them, and ELP was another.

I know that Nate DuRoff is deceased.
Is there anyone around who might have worked there and have access to the (paper) records?

Would someone please post the significance of these delta numbers? Can they be used to date a pressing?

    Thanks!

The delta numbers were put there by the company that manufactured the metal parts used to press the records, Alcor (sic?).

The purpose of this thread is to understand the approximate dates the delta numbers correspond to. If you look at the data, you'll notice the delta numbers progress sequentially. If you put them in order, the sequence is remarkably similar to the order of the albums by release dates. Basically, I think they are a job number--job 11245 is followed by 11246, etc.

So, for example, today I bought a Yes Fragile LP, pressed by Monarch. It's a SD19132, a later reissue by Atlantic. The delta numbers are 23878. On Frank's chart you can see that delta 23878 is between Foreigner Double Vision and Joe jackson Look Sharp. So, the metal parts for my Fragile reissue were likely made sometime between July 1978 and March 1979, the release dates for DV and LS. If we get more numbers off records, the dates can be tightened up even more accurately.

    That's a great example! Here's another one.
When Bruce Spizer was writing his book, the Solo Beatles on Apple Records, he came to conclude -- based on the information he had from trade magazines and other correspondence -- that the Two Virgins album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono was NOT issued on November 11, 1968 -- a date that had appeared in many publications. You'll find that date on Wikipedia to this day.

Bruce said to me, "Frank, that album clearly was not released until January, 1969," and he put it in his book. Guess what? The Monarch numbers confirm that Bruce was right where everyone before him was wrong. The number was assigned after the number for Led Zeppelin's first album, which was released on January 12, 1969.

Therefore, the Monarch numbers confirm Bruce's research: Two Virgins came out in January.

    Another example? Sure.
On the list you'll see Buffalo Springfield's first album. My notes (not shown) indicate that this was the second lineup of the album, containing "For What it's Worth." That lineup came out in March, 1967, whereas the original LP was released on April 2, 1966.
    Now we know.

Mamas and Papas - Farewell to the First Golden Era, Dunhill D 50025 mono, delta 11115; Dunhill DS 50025, stereo, delta 11116 (interestingly, the delta info is missing on side one for both of these, though the MR in a circle is there)
Turtles - Turtle Soup, White Whale WWS-7124, delta 13875
Turtles - Wooden Head, White Whale WWS-7133, delta 15071
