No, the two points are moving at the same speed . . . each one is moving a different distance.

    No. That's what is happening.

Think about it. The circumference is the distance to be traveled. The circumference of a 12" circle is much greater than that of a 5" circle. Simple geometry.

Point on outer groove moves faster than point on inner groove.

It also affect the sound quality on vinyl records. Due to the faster relative speed when the needle is near the outer edge of the record (the needle travels further with each rotation of the record), it provides the best sound quality. If I've calculated correctly, the stylus travels approximately 19 inches at a radius of 6 inches, while it travels only approximately 12.5 inches at a radius of 4 inches.

This is the reason The Beatles put their best songs as the first track on Side One and Side Two. On Peter Gabriel's album So he wanted the song "In Your Eyes" to be the closing song on the album (last track on Side Two), but due to the audio limitations of vinyl it was made the first song on Side Two.

. . . not to mention tracking angle . . . among all those other "attitude problems" I haven't had to worry about for 30 years.

The two points are moving at the same angular velocity, not linear velocity. Angular velocity is degrees per time period. The linear velocity at the outside edge of an LP is much greater than at the inner .

    Very well.

But each point IS moving a different distance.

He didn't mean you. You had it wrong. A point on the outer groove moves a longer distance in the same amount of time, so it moves faster. Back to the funny....

I can't find it online, but one of my favorite Rodrigues cartoons shows an audiophile approaching his turntable with an aerosol can; the can is labelled 'Spray Dolby'.
