I always loved this photograph... Why ?
Because they are too cool! Check out the matching kicks, and black outfits.
Even more importantly.. look at them rocking the hell out! Striking a pose-
Amazing.. just too much, Stu is great with the dark shades and half snubbing
the audience. John, Paul and George look deep into the song, and just plain
rocking. The only sad thing is there was no Ringo, or even Pete yet. This is a
photo of The Silver Beetles playing in 1960, minus Tommy Moore the drummer
at the time. He was late that night and Johnny Hutchinson is seen here filling in.
    c., mid 1960.

The Beatles - "Mad Day Out" Photo Session
U.K. The Beatles went on a magical tour to destinations around London for new publicity shots.
Arriving unannounced, Don McCullin (LIFE) took famous shots of the group playing, and horsing around together. The Beatles were photographed in very public places.. mingling, and hanging out with fans. The b&w picture used on the inside gatefold of ''The Beatles 1962 - 1966'' Red, and ''The Beatles 1967 - 1970'' Blue double LP's was shot on the Mad Day Out.
That photo was taken by another photographer at the time.

This beautiful color photo was taken by photographer Don McCullin on July 26, 1968 ..

While we're on a Beatles trip, i like to collect a few early items. An original gig list (possibly from the fan club?) from late 62 listing concerts for Jan/Feb 63 just back from Germany and things were hotting up for these busy lads..

That sure is a brutal schedule. Some days they played the Cavern for a lunchtime matinee gig, then returned as the headliner that same night .. thanks for sharing, any more like this ?

Thanks, this is the first newsletter from May 62, the later ones are quite common but the first few seem scarce and are fascinating in the story, theres a real feel they were close to the fans at the time. This was pre national fame, in fact pre Beatles records & contract!

They certainly covered some miles on the last three days! 555 miles. I know that's just a trip to the store for some of us but, in a knackered old van on the England A-roads at the time, that is pretty amazing! I definitely wouldn't like to do it even now, unless you loaned me a Bentley :)

John & Harry - Horsing Around On The Lawn In L.A.
During the infamous "lost weekend'' John Lennon was in L.A. to produce, and record Nilsson's new album "Pussycats" .. They're more associated with the hard partying and troubles than for releasing a great LP. Harry had damaged his vocal chords at the start of recording, and never told John for fear of him abandoning the sessions. The recording of the record was a who's who of super stars, at one point having three drummers at one time- Ringo, Moon, and Keltner. The record is spotty due to Harry's throat damage, but had enough good songs to carry it through.. I always thought there's some really nice songs on the LP.

The Silver Beetles - Grosvenor Ballroom Set List
U.K. This is a set list, with added notes (strings and plecs) written by Paul McCartney.
The exact date is uncertain, they played there 14 times through 1960, and part of 1961.
The Grosvenor was a wild, rowdy joint that was often overrun by Teds. Very Rare!!

Mark Lewisohn has said that he'll look to have this collection of original and copied documents made available at some time. I find them fascinating little insights into a time before any of us knew who they were. If you got 'em post 'em! :righton:

Rare national pop music paper featuring The Beatles.. Sgt. Pepper's promo two-page gatefold color photo! This is so cool, it came out a few weeks after the U.S. LP's release .. I like the cover Columbia promo featuring Dylan's ''Greatest Hits'' LP, and others. Crisp NM pages.
