I'm assuming that Steve had nothing to do with this "more" version on Garland Records [seen here ] as it's neither Del Rack/DCC and none of the groups look like those recorded by the Wenzels in beautiful [ugh!] downtown Downey. That being the case, how could Garland Records [who are these guys, anyways?] rip off the title from the Del Rack original?

    Michael I LOVE WIDE S-T-E-R-E-O!

    Hey Ron,

Garland is DCC..Del-Rack is DCC...they were all one happy DCC label family...

I couldn't pull up the ebay link...Steve did do a second volume with the title you mention. "More Surf Legends (And Rumors)" Garland GZS-023...28 tracks of surfin frenzy...sounds GREAT!!!

    ron,

Steve DID stuff for GARLAND, which was part of Dunhill Compact Classics. "Footstompin' Oldies" and "Remember When" (other Garland oldies comps) have been in my collection since their original release time!

Believe it or not, this is the second swipe at Downey that I heard today (the first was this morning from a colleague). Hey, a town that gave us the Carpenters and the Blasters can't be all bad.

These are still on my list of things to get. Does Tom Port still have them? Does Steve still have his surfboard or is he a respectable married man now? :0

Wenzel's Music Town in Downey was great. Tom Wenzel's dad was the engineer of all of the great Downey Records stuff and the "back room" where all the 45's were was the old studio. I spent many happy hours there going through all the old records not shown to the general public.

I remember being there one day when "Pipeline" came on the radio inside the store. Of course, I looked around to the 25 other customers inside to see if any made the connection between the song and where they were standing. Most didn't , but several of the bunch made eye contact with me as if to say: "Yes, that was recorded on this very spot". Then I couldn't stand it any more and just shouted out "Hey everyone, this song was recorded right in this room, and that guy standing over there is the son of the producer and engineer of the song". Tom was embarrassed but grateful I think. People started coming up to him and shaking his hand and stuff. Pretty neat moment...

I used to hunt down used records at Wenzel's in the early 1980s as I worked not too far from his shop. Cool place with real atmosphere. Didn't know about the "Pipeline," et al., connection until after I got the Surf Legends CD many moons ago and read the liners. I remember chatting with Bill [?] Wenzel, the producer/engineer, and finding out that he graduated from the high school where I was at that time teaching. He didn't seem all that impressed.

Ron, By the way, it's not a Fender Bass, but rather a Gibson Thunderbird.

Er . . . I personally wouldn't know the difference between a Gibson Thunderbird and a Buick Skylark. The quote in my signature comes from a SH tongue-in-cheek comment in the liners. And besides, are you saying that all the groups featured on the CD used Gibson Thunderbird basses?

All of the bands I talked with that recorded at Wenzel's Downey Music Productions Studio used Fender basses.

Ron: Maybe, but I don't think it's that important. Why don't we move on.

Which brings up the next point: namely, can my stereo handle all that Fender bass?

    Ron,

You are just going to have to crank it up and find out (assuming that you have a copy).
Hope your neighbors don't mind. Mine didn't :D

Saucier [!?!] Mississippi? Let me guess . . . It's friggin' HOT there right now! Here in Japan the summer has been the mildest that I can ever remember. Last few days have been *chilly.* In any event, glad you made the move OK. Let me know if you need anything from Tokyo.

Yes Ron, it is friggin hot. Humid too. The jet lag did not help. Moving from Japan was an adventure. You would not believe the trouble we went through to get the cats here. Then again, you live in Japan. You would believe it. It was about as easy as running naked through fire. I will let you know if we need anything from Japan.
