Elvis Costello without doubt. He probably has a song/album for any mood you may be in.

Come to think of it, does he have any songs that aren't about romantic relationships gone wrong?

Listen to Harry Nilsson's 'You're Breakin' My Heart' or John Entwistle's 'I Feel Better' and 'You Can Be So Mean.' At least they'll put a smile on your face.

Exactly! I don't think there are many!

I love the way he can sing about the same thing so much, but never repeats himself and has different perspectives on it. As John Peel said about The Fall, always different, always the same.

Nobody does anguish like David Gedge!

Yep. Most of his songs are indeed about romantic relationships gone wrong, but he's also written several tunes about the beginnings of relationships (or at least yearning/lusting over a gal; most of those are Cinerama tunes [e.g., "Barefoot in the Park" and "Your Charms"]), plus at least three songs that have nothing to do with love/lust/relationships at all ("Snapshots," "One Day This Will All Be Yours" and "All About Eve" come to mind).

As well as the superb 'All This and More'.

'You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends' too. Another great one. Though perhaps that is...

Lou Barlow comes to mind. A lot of his breakup tunes are remarkably bitter and sad, but there's also plenty of comforting ones as well, such as "Nothing Lasts."

Not sure if the sad breakup albums are necessarily what I'd want to listen to after a breakup... I'd probably reach for some upbeat Van Morrison stuff or Motorhead or something like that. Something irrelevant to distract me from heartbreak. Irish fiddle jigs lighten the spirits if you don't dislike that kind of stuff.
