For me, Lou Reed's Berlin takes the prize. The children crying on "The Kids", the whole theme of the album, the lonely-sounding tunes, all that makes up to the most wrist-cutting inducive album of all time, at least to me

I'd go with Berlin as well. Although Metal Machine Music doesn't have a lot of laughs in it either....

Peggy Suicide by Julian Cope. It has been a while since I last listened to it but I can remember thinking how depressing it was!

Judee Sill made two albums. Pick one.

I was going to say XO just because of the constant going back and forth about trying to be happy. He seems genuinely unstable.

    I second Judee Sill above.

Listening to Sufjan Stevens' Carrie & Lowell right now which is pretty painful.

Manic Street Preachers "Holy Bible" too.

Do you guys think the Judee Sill albums are depressing purely on musical terms or are you more referencing her personal story? Or maybe they're both interwined to the point where they're inseparable?

I'm a big fan of hers and I'm curious since I don't think I've found her music, in and of itself, to be particularly depressing. Her story, of course, is one of the bleakest out there.

I've always found something melancholy about her, perhaps most in the voice. Even uplifting songs like "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" seem to have something, I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe "depressing" is too strong a word.

Another dark singer songwriter album. I think the original cover art captures the mood.

    Lou Reed - Berlin
Leonard Cohen - Songs Of Love & Hate
    Springsteen - Nebraska

I'd say Radiohead's Kid A & Amnesiac both have some pretty damn bleak moments.
