"A Day in the Life" is an awesome, epic tune, of course.

There are a few songs on SPLHCB that I like even more though. "With a Little Help From My Friends", "...Mr. Kite", "She's Leaving Home", for example.

flipping this around, I find that the "lesser" songs in John's catalogue have kind of worn well for me (and are somewhat underrated); songs like Doctor Robert, Good Morning Good Morning, Glass Onion, Hey Bulldog may have been less "inspired", but they rock out and hang together well.

  5. The majority of Beatles songs are overrated, but certainly some Beatles songs are overrated and some are underrated in comparison to other Beatles songs.

    Hey, Jude

The 'song' half has a great melody but some careless lyrics; we don't need the endlessly repeated wordless chant to the fade-out.

A lot of people seem to feel that way, but I don't get it. Without the long ending, "Hey Jude" is just another song - it's the ending that makes it distinctive and epic...

"Hey Jude" isn't so much overrated as over-performed because it has the structure and communal vibe to work well as a horrid finale number at awards ceremonies and "tribute to X" or "induction/charity" shows where fifteen different guitar players and every jerkweed mediocre millionaire rockstar and flavor-of-the-month all get onstage together and try to outdo each other in an interminable series of 30-second individual ego-strokes. So I just automatically associate it with dyspepsia and general torture.

My vote for overrated Beatles song would be "Something." It's a very lovely, well-written and performed song that I enjoy listening to, but Jesus, people act as if it's one of the world's all-time greatest compositions or primordial uber-songs, like a Chopin nocturne or "Go All the Way."

Almost all of the songs released before Rubber Soul are grossly overrated.

I think the verses are strong melodically - and the lyrics are largely good. McCartney could, I feel, have improved them by ignoring Lennon's advocacy of the 'the movement you need line' - all it needed was a different definite article.

I've read that the idea of the ending was inspired by a desire to 'outdo' Jimmy Webb (who was present at the session) on MacArthur Park. I dislike wordless choruses/verses anyway, so it's never going to 'work' for me.

yes I nominated that one too. and I noticed that he took the lead line from james taylor, who recorded "something in the way she moves" at age 20 for apple records with harrison participating in some of the sessions for the lp.

I disagree about hey jude being overrated, especially with regard to lyrics (top notch, and john praised them too) or ending - a great innovation for a #1 single to go 7:11 with that togetherness and musicality capping it off. way predates "got to give it up" in that regard. sort of reminded me of the sea receding peacefully in the moonlight after a gorgeous day. and there was a palpable excitement to the melody and singing and just the presence of the whole thing in the video.

IMO, Paperback Writer, Rain and Penny Lane are as good as pop/rock gets. The rest are indeed overrated to various degrees.

Haven't read all 15 pages so I don't imagine I'm providing anything new here, but FWIW IMHO etc etc it's one of Hey Jude, Let It Be or Something.

I think if we compiled the whole thread we would have every Beatles song. My vote has always been Helter Skelter followed by Get Back.

There were several comments along the lines of, "have we named every Beatle song yet?"
So I thought I'd do a little tally-ing and see what that showed us.

I discarded joke suggestions like "Sheik of Araby" and "Cry for a Shadow".
I discarded those that were qualified with a "maybe" or "probably".
I discarded certain ones who's post suggested they maybe were just going by personal taste or similar.
(For what tis worth I was trying to be fair at all times.)
I discarded votes for "Lucy in the Sky", "Good Morning, Good Morning", "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and "Savoy Truffle"
as they were made by an established Beatles troll (He's on the list.) who's opinion carries zero weight on a Beatles thread
(or probably any music thread for that matter).

    1) Hey Jude -- 20 votes (stands to reason as huge as it was/is)
    2) Yesterday -- 13 (no real surprise here either)
    3) All You Need is Love -- 8 (one of my two votes)
    4) Come Together -- 7 (this one is a surprise - to me)
    5) The Long and Winding Road -- 6 ( no surprise)
    *) Yellow Submarine -- 6
    *) Something --6
    8) In My Life -- 5
    *) Get Back -- 5
    *) Let it Be --5
    *) Twist and Shout -- 5
    12) Love Me Do --4 (didn't think this was rated that highly to begin with)
    *) Strawberry Fields -- 4
    *) A Day in the Life --4
    15) Michelle -- 3
    *) Hello Goodbye--3
*) She Loves You --3 (I might have considered this one myself)
*) Run For Your Life --3 (another one awful low rated to be over rated)
    19) The Fool on the Hill --2 (my second candidate)
    *) When I'm 64 --2
*) Ob la Di Ob la Da --2
    *) Lady Madonna --2
    *) Helter Skelter -- 2
    * While My Guitar Gently Weeps -- 2
*) Revolution 9 --2 (must be two distinct camps on this -- For me it's 'how can a track 99.33% of fans skip be over rated?')

    26) I'm not listing all the single votes.

For a thread of 15 pages only one vote, I'd say, defeats the proposal.
For those curious, there were 26 entries to receive a single vote

I also threw out 2 votes for "Mr. Moonlight". Bad? Yes!! Over rated? not possible.
