If you're in Morrison's (UK) in the evening, they play some pretty decent stuff...or at least my local does.

I've heard Nirvana, Blondie, Eagles, Dylan....

I worked at an Albertsons supermarket in '84. The playlist in the store was your typical musak of the times. The only exception I ever heard was, oddly enough,

Aerosmith's 'Chip away at the Stone' (Studio version). It wasn't just a one-time thing either, I definitely heard it more than once.

I just figured it was a bit of subversiveness by an Aerosmith fan somewhere in the chain. You never heard rock music in a store back then.

I've heard You Didn't Have to Be So Nice by the Lovin' Spoonful in a supermarket, a few years ago. That's a starting point. I probably wouldn't pay close enough attention to anything more rocking than that to be able to identify it.

"Purple Haze." The 1967 stereo mix sounded weird in the store because their speakers were far apart.

I work in a hospital and we have Muzak type instrumental music playing in the public areas. I barely notice it anymore, but recently I noticed two songs that sounded familiar. I had to stop and think for a minute, but realized one was Metallica's "Fade To Black" and the other was Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust." Two songs that probably shouldn't be played in a hospital.

Once in a while the soothing piano based music will give way to some shreddy metal guitar. It must be tagged as 'instrumental' and sneaks through.

I don’t know if it’s the most “rockin’,” but hearing The Records’ “Starry Eyes” in the store was a pretty cool thing (in 2016). The oddest thing I’ve heard recently was “Spies Like Us” by Paul McCartney...yes, in 2017. There was a Muzak programmer out there somewhere who threw that in with a wink and a nod.
