Although I dig the film itself, I still have my doubts about the logic involved in the big "twist" during the last 10 minutes or so.... I've read some explanations that seem to have a bit of credibility, but it's still treading dangerously close to WTF territory.... :p

What's the film where the guy goes to the World Trade Centre to visit his father and it turns out it's 9/11??

    That makes sense, actually.

As does the notion that all of the present-day stuff in Once Upon a Time in America is just a pipe dream as De Niro drifts off in deeply stoned bliss in an opium den. (The last shot is of him lying there -- and finally smiling.)

"Sleepaway Camp" takes the cake with no contenders.

I recall seeing MAGNOLIA in the theater and when it was over, remarking, "So EYES WIDE SHUT is *not* the strangest Tom Cruise movie this year..."

I just gave this a re-watch after picking up the Criterion edition.... and although I still think the film is excellent as a whole, I stand by my previous statement: the ending would have been much more effective if the bells were only heard, and not seen.

Not to the extreme of some of the other films mentioned in this thread... but Harper (1966) certainly ended on a frame that I didn't expect... another minute, or even a few more seconds, might have given it more "closure".

Two of my all time fave rave groovy fab grab flix have WTF endings...

Videodrome - I love this movie so very very much but the ending is a truly WTF moment. No spoilers, just watch it if you get a chance. "Long Live The New Flesh!"

Brazil - The last 20 minutes are a whole lot of WTF until the final few moments make some sense of it all. My #1 movie of all time. "He's gotten away from us."
