Are there any TVs available in the States that support PAL and NTSC playback?

    Thanks!

There are, but in very small numbers. Not common.

Geez, you'd think it would be that difficult to accomplish these days.

I lot of DVD players can convert PAL>NTSC though.

It's curious, in Europe it's almost impossible from the early 90's on to find a T.V. set that is not NTSC and Secam compatible, most T.V. sets I got my hands on can display Pal, Secam and NTSC via video in.

I wonder why there was a difference in the first place?

The differences resulted from the different line frequencies of the electrical systems in Europe and the US.

I was surprised that my SHARP 50 inch 3D flatscreen played back video from my Multi Standard VCR - it played PAL just like anything else. I think now that we're out of the CRT era that most TVs will do the job.

And no, the VCR was not playing back the signal as NTSC - on screen display clearly indicated that the TV recognized the signal as SD PAL.

Here are the specs for a Samsung 58" HDTV. This appears to support both formats. Am I mistaken?

Yes, you can by a simple converter to do PAL-NTSC or whole televisions that play either format. If you are only interested in viewing DVDs/Blu-rays that are compatible with either system, there are players for that to. 220 Electronics here in Chicago-land is a major retailer for this kind of stuff.

All you need is a DVD/BluRay player that will convert PAL to NTSC....a lot of players can be easily hacked in minutes thru the remote control menu options.
I have bought Philips players ar Walmart that were easily hacked. Just go to Google and input the make, model number followed by the word 'hack'..and it should take you to a site with the info you need.
I have also purchased a couple of hundred dvd's and blu Ray discs thru Amazon UK for considerably less than prices listed on Amazon sites in the USA and Canada.
Great to get titles not available in North America.

Both of my Oppos convert PAL to NTSC so it looks like I'm in good shape. I've been loading up on Region 2 Doctor Who DVDs from Amazon UK since many Region 1 DVDs are OOP and uber expensive. In fact, I recently sold about 4 OOP Region 1 DVDs on eBay and was able to buy a whopping 29 Region 2 DVDs from Amazon UK with the proceeds.

Here in the UK I buy a lot of Region 1 DVDs playing them on my Pioneer BDP-170. It basically took five minutes to convert it to a multi region player.

I think Pal is being phased out, and I live in Spain, a Pal country. I've noticed recently that some concert DVDs from Spanish bands/singers that were shot in Spain (this is important) are being released on NTSC for the Spanish market. 3 or 4 months ago I bought Three Days Of The Condor, UK Eureka released which has both a DVD and a Blu ray. The DVD was region 2 locked but on NTSC system even 'though it's a UK-only release.

My Panasonic plasma VT60 thankfully displays NTSC, PAL, 50/60hz, etc.

This is where I'll probably go to get our next TV.

My Oppo can convert PAL to NTSC on the fly, but it results in a moving image that's not all that smooth. I think I'll be better off going for a multi-system TV.
