Yes, yes, I have that same CD+DVD package. My Win7 computer will not play the CD of that package.
I think, EMI was trying and playing with some "copy protection" schemes, which are more correctly described as playback prevention and honest-customer frustration devices.
Maybe, they also corrupted the DVD with such "copy protection" and honest-customer frustration devices.

Had you, unintentionally, bought the Love CD+DVD package from a counterfeit pirate producer, you would not have to worry about these playback problems.
Had you downloaded the content of that package from some internet file sharing websites, you would not be plagued by such playback problems.
But, you fool, you was honest and bought that album from the legitimate copyright owners, and as a reward for your honesty, you are prevented from just using what you have payed for.

That's the way the record industry bussiness goes, that's the way they try to win their honest devoted customers in buying theirs corrupted playback-prevented releases.
Because, if they do so, their customers get the kick in the crotch (no playback).
While all those who downloaded the contents from file sharing website, received a much better product which will playback on any device.
And those, who unintentionally bought a counterfeit product, will not experience any playback problems at all.

Sorry, I cannot help you with your playback problem.
I jsut want to make it clear, where the problem lies.

    Thanks folks for your inputs.

Any recommendations for superb versions of multichannel opera or classical?

There have been some cute uses of multi-channel

There a James Taylor multi-channel SACD where he sing "I'm in the back seat" or something like that, and the voice moves to the rear speakers for that line. Can't remember which album.

There's a Destiny's Child SACD where the guitar lick on "Bootylicious" (sampled from Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen"), goes around the room from speaker to speaker, essentially circling the listener for the whole track.

Definitely hit and miss depending on your taste for the albums they have chosen thus far to release in Quad. However, it's great that they have done so and I hope the program continues! These old quad mixes that have been languishing in the vaults for decades really need to see the light of day before its too late.

The Bjork surrounded box is excellent even if it is DTS surround. Homogenic Might be my pick but debut and post are also great!

Seal - Best...worth it for Kiss Like a Rose, let alone the rest.

All the Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson surround stuff.

Gavin Harrison - Cheating the Polygraph

Bryan Adams - Reckless...only the PCM 5.1 stream though, the other two are dreadful!

If you like quality pop/rock I would suggest Toy Matinee, if you're able to seek out the DVD-audio disc. Stunnig, immersive mix.

Lark's Tounges In Aspic (DVD-audio) is another winner for me, with the combo of Brufords drumming and Muirs percussion really surrounding you.

Most classical surround releases use the rear channels mostly for room ambience. I always found that dissatisfying. Then I discovered TACET, a German label that releases great quality recordings in what they call "Real Surround", meaning that the instruments are placed all around you.

I have almost all of their surround releases and I love them. You get to hear so much more details than in a stereo recording.

Here is a list of their titles in surround (for some strange reason, the SACD of Beethoven's 9th is not on it - a big recommendation from me).

Unfortunately, they are not really cheap, especially when you buy them from abroad. The UK vendor MDT has some decent prices, though.

  20. Anything by Steven Wilson (King Crimson, Jethro Tull, XTC, it's all great). Also:
    Roxy Music - Avalon (SACD)
Jeff Wayne - War Of The Worlds (SACD)
Elton John - Elton John (SACD), it makes Paul Buckmaster's orchestrations sound less overblown
    Beatles - Love (DVD-A)
Genesis - The more recent titles like Duke, Genesis (Mama) and Invisible Touch. I don't really like those of the 70s albums, which is sad since I like the music a lot more.
Steely Dan - Gaucho (SACD), when are we going to get the other albums?

There have been so many multichannel mixes that originally weren't my taste, that I now think are great, I have lost count. They are expensive however, and I fully understand the apprehension. My taste is very broad and I like every one of them.

Paul McCartney & Wings - Venus & Mars DTS (better than Band on the Run DTS, imho)
Moody Blues - the 'core 7' are available on SACD with surround (quad) To Our Childrens Childrens Children is great in surround.
Steve Miller Band - Fly Like an Eagle DTS
    Billy Joel - The Stranger
Roxy Music - Avalon - sounds fantastic but is expensive now.

There's a Chicago box set called QUADIO (Blu-ray) that sounds wonderful in surround. And it's a bargain.

Thanks for the heads up on this, I'll have to keep an eye out. I'm a very casual classical listener (I really enjoy going to see our symphony, but rarely listen at home for some reason), but the idea of a surround mix that feels like you're on the stage is really intriguing. I don't know why more don't do that...the 'rear ambience' thing doesn't really add much in this genre, IMO.
