All of this discussion of Elvis inspired me to create an updated 33 track "Very Best of" CD-R. I stuck with 1956 - 1964 ... I like the Sun material ... and quite a few of his post '64 songs, probably another CD-R worth ... but "my Elvis" was making his best music during 1956 - 1964 ... IMO, of course :) ... it's a pretty predictable group of songs ... only 1 non-chart song ... Suspicion ... which isn't even the definitive version, but I like it ...

Needless to say, our host mastered most of the songs ... but since he hasn't had the opportunity yet to master all of my favorite Elvis songs (I am still hopeful), I had to go to other sources (which I have listed) for the rest of the songs.

I welcome your comments ... yeas and nays ... especially if you can suggest better sources for the non - SH songs ...

C@@L CAT, nice line up! It sent me looking to see who mastered that Elvis '56 cd. It doesn't give any credits.

    Anyone know?

    Hi Shawn,

I like "Viva Las Vegas" ... it was one of the last cuts that I made from my list of potential songs ... it's also one of only a handful of Elvis "movie songs" that I like ...

Great line-up! 'Mean Woman Blues' would have been a good addition!

The release in early 2003 (reissue using DSD technology) was remastered by Vic Anesini. I don't know who mastered the 96 version.

Good tracks Chip. When you're limited to 80 minutes some tough decisions must be made.

Coincidentally - I've been listening to my favorite Elvis CDR the last few days. I burned this one last year and focused on the more rockin', soulful, rootsy side of Elvis. No ballads or bad movie tracks need apply:

    That's All Right Mama
    Blue Moon of Kentucky
    Good Rockin' Tonight
    Mystery Train
    Heartbreak Hotel
    I Got A Woman
    Money Honey
    Blue Suede Shoes
    My Baby Left Me
    Lawdy Miss Clawdy
    Shake Rattle and Roll
    Hound Dog
    Jailhouse Rock
    One Night
    Fever
    I Feel So Bad
    A Mess of Blues
    Reconsider Baby
    Little Sister
    Down In the Alley
    Tiger Man (from the comeback)
Tryin' To Get To You (Comeback)
    Stranger In My Hometown
    Power of My Love
Baby, You're Wearin That Loved On Look
    Suspicious Minds
I Washed My Hands In the Muddy Water
    Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On

I have the 'remastered' version (2000?) at home. I don't recall the mastering credit either.

chip-hp & Perkom those both sound like great listens. I will always wonder what we might have got if Elvis had had a real music guy at the helm. The Sun sessions and his first two RCA records are truly ground-breaking stuff. It is a shame he got stuck churning out bad movie soundtracks for so long after that. If he could have hooked up with someone who understood the music, his catalog might look very different today and his place as the true "King" would have been unquestionable IMHO.

    Hi Bob,

Somewhat ... but I was listening to my Elvis test CD-R in the car this morning ... and "Love Me" just kind of sat there ... I left out "Love Me Tender" for the same reason ... "Viva Las Vegas" was one of my final cuts.

BTW, sorry ... Bob ... but "Do The Clam" never was under consideration.

It's called Beach Shack and can be found on the "Spinout" soundtrack if you're interested. :D

Worst Elvis songs (IMO) not already mentioned:
    Old McDonald
    Confidence
How Would You Like To Be
    Datin'
    A Dog's Life

    I might have missed a few. :)
