It takes a certain kind of a sense of humor. I can definitely understand why some people would just find it idiotic. For my part, I'd never watch ANY of those movies otherwise. And sometimes the movies are so bad that even the mocking can't make it watchable. And sometimes there seems to be a certain smugness involved which makes the whole thing grating even though the movies are objectively terrible. But at its best I think it's very funny.

I think your description works well. The show (and various offshoots like Rifftrax) have always had to (hopefully) strike a balance between having fun and joking but not seeming too mean or too smug. They didn't always succeed. I tended to think Mike Nelson skewed a little more mean-spirited than Joel. I can't say this with 100% certainty, but it certainly seems like Nelson went with far more "fat jokes" for instance.

The show also always had to balance obscure references and things that, even if you get them, are clever more than laugh-out-loud funny.

And yes, sometimes it's the movie at hand rather than the riffing that is just too bad or too boring to handle.

I would normally be inclined to say that once you know even just the basic premise of MST3K, you'll know whether you'll at least *like* it versus hating it. That's generally still true. But maybe some newer fans and younger folks are going into old (and new) MST episodes with a different idea, perhaps thinking it is more along the lines of like a Red Letter Media video on YouTube just talking s**t about a bad movie (which can sometimes be funny too), and MST3K and other types of that "riffing" is a very different animal from a bunch of people watching a bad movie and yelling at the screen and saying a thousand times that the movie is bad.

I always thought the riffing on videos was the best part of Beavis & Butthead, so discovering MST3K was a pleasant surprise.

Yeah I think its the sarcastic smugness that ruins it for me. Doesn't come across as spontaneous.

That's why I prefer Red Letter Media's Best of the Worst and Wheel of the Worst formats.

Got to watch episode 1101 last night finally. As a long-time fan (25 years!) I cried like a little baby at the opening theme song, I was just so pleased to have MST3k back. I agree about the riff speed (quite high, may be worth slowing down slightly) and it would also be useful to differentiate the voices a bit better, as it is a little hard to hear who is saying what. But otherwise very pleased indeed.

  14. A bit OT but thought I'd share here as I know quite a few in this thread are RiffTrax fans. I recently watched the RiffTrax of Guy From Harlem and Samurai Cop - both IMO are as good as the best of MST3K. Absolutely hilarious riffing. RiffTrax can be a bit hit-or-miss but these two are stellar.

I watched them for free on Amazon Prime but it now looks like these two films are only available as Amazon pay rentals (there's still a bunch of Prime Rifftraxs on there though).

I saw the live riffing of Samurai Cop on Tuesday. Man, that movie is so bad it riffs itself!

Joel made plenty of fat jokes. Off the top of my head, check out Master Ninja 2. Riffs on a fat guy's heart exploding, "Are you gonna eat the rest of that Pizza?", "Bet I could eat that guy. Yup, I know it, positive." Joel is not exempt from making fun of fat people.

Yes, which is why I didn't say Joel didn't make them. I only said that my admittedly unconfirmed recollection is that Mike made more.

Wow we really phased into kind of boredom with this show... My friends
tired to watch this said what crap is and we Gen X so.. we are not amused.
They have it on comet, so sub par .....

    Hamhead The Bear From Delaware

That show is still the best. I still have all of my VHS home recorded tapes of all the CC and early SFC episodes before TCI cable did away SciFi channel.

I wonder how it would go down if they riffed on the 1925 version of The Wizard Of Oz (which the folks at Nitrateville said "is the Plan 9 of silent cinema"),
it's a total trainwreck if you never seen it. It has a somewhat decent cast, but it's a incoherent mess that they can totally rip on.
Kiss Meets The Phantom At The Park would be epic as a MST3K episode.

Based on "They have it on comet", I assume you are referring to a prior version of MST3K and not this revival? If so, there's another thread you started a couple years ago with a post that included the words "talentless boobs" that is still open for discussion and comment.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 some kind of awful

That being said, if you did not like it before, you are probably not going to enjoy its revival. :)

I watched the first episode - over the top for sure - not overly funny - but when I think about it I never did like the goofy skits on the original show. We used to fast forward through the skits when we watched the original show. I do appreciate them more now though.

I prefer Rifftrax by a large margin (Mike is the funny man - best host period) - but I'm happy the show is back and will certainly watch it.

Patton Oswalt Reboots Mystery Science Theater as the New TV's Frank

One of the first times I ever saw Patton was when he hosted the panel for the 20th Anniversary of MST3K in 2008 at Comic Con. It was presented as a bonus on the first Shout Factory DVD set. Anyway, Patton's greeting to the audience was memorable: "Greetings sweaty shut-ins".

I hope we get some "shorts" in Season 12 or some shorts used for digital content somewhere. I love those. :)
