I've always had a soft spot for A Positive Life - Synaesthetic (1994). Nothing really groundbreaking but it always puts me in a good mood. Nice and chilled ambient dub with lots of nice, lush synths and non-disruptive beats.
Chocolate Chip Cookies was their masterpiece, but it was legally disappeared via an injunction from Christies, the Canadian arm of Nabisco: the packaging looked way too much like a Christies product.
The Corrs were beginning to have some hits in their home country, throughout Europe, Asia and Australia in the mid '90. They'd released their first two albums, each with a smattering of hits. Then in 1997, one of the singles from TALK ON CORNERS, "Only When I Sleep", had a non-album b-side track called "Remember". I, along with other fans, thought this track was too good to be relegated to a b-side. It was also a bonus track on a Japanese issue of TALK ON CORNERS, but other than that, quite obscure. In this video, someone's used the song as a backing track to a different Corrs video - and it seems to fit: Harry
Skimmed this whole very thorough thread and did not see this mid-nineties gem: Eric Matthews: It's Heavy In Here This record also has Jason Falkner all over it, who is also well-represented in this thread.
I' m thinking you might have a couple of Yello, records. One Second & Flag come to mind. Ken, he sang on lead, backing & co wrote some songs. Aye what a beautiful voice, the man had. He was very unique. My gaffer, who is also fae Dundee, told me his old man had a big furniture store, where he used to sell early Associates records. I love these little bits of history.
Overlooked Seattle band released this album in '92. Still think its a killer hard rock album. Gruntruck - Push
Eric Troyer's Model Citizen from 1993 is pretty good. The songs are catchy, the performances are fine, and the production may be dated now but it does have that retro sound that I like. The only real problem I have with it is it's too short! There are only six songs, and two of them are the same just mixed differently (one version has radio sound effects at certain points in the song while the other version doesn't - I do like how you're given the option to listen to the song with the sound effects or not).
These are records I wish more people would hear, some are more well-known than others. I will kick myself afterwards for all the ones I'm forgetting: Brian Jonestown Massacre - Give It Back (1997) Eleventh Dream Day - El Moodio (1995) Marisa Monte - A Great Noise (1996) Maria Zerfall - Kopfkrieg 1985-1995 (1995) Buffalo Daughter - New Rock (1998) Roky Erickson - All That May Do My Rhyme (1995) Roots Manuva - Brand New Second Hand (1999) Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out (1997) Stina Nordenstam - Dynamite (1997) Sun City Girls - Kaliflower (1993) Jessamine - Another Fictionalized History (1997) Takako Minekawa - Roomic Cube (1996) The Negro Problem - Their General Suave Guys Request (1998) Bardo Pond - Set and Setting (1999) Bongwater - The Power of P---y (1991) dada - Puzzle (1992) Juana Molina - Rara (1996)
Another Canadian band that I don't think was known outside of Canada. They won a Juno (Canadian Grammy) in '91 for this cover of Hot Chocolate's Everyones' A Winner.
I also have CCC plus their third album, Book of Rejection, as well as an album called In Her Dream by Bob Wiseman sings Wrench Tuttle, which included a couple of songs on which Laura, Jack, and Pat of LST sang background vocals. The group was from Toronto, and were named after a landmark there (Leslie Spit). They played Portland, Maine in Winter of 1991, and I got to hang out with them.
The Trash Can Sinatras - I've See Everything. A truly great forgotten gem of an album. Easily in my top ten of all-time. I miss the 90s too. Wild, crazy, carefree days
Don't forget Michael Head & The Strands - The Magical World of the Strands. Here's Tom with the Weather and Corner of Miles and Gil would go on a list of overlooked records from the early '00s, too.
Saw them at the knitting factory in NYC during a Label showcase, great set. Picasso Trigger played an amazing set as well , still remember their version of "kids in America" with the trumpet, awesome!
The Beautiful Storybook I still love this album. Got some mild play, but I think it qualifies. Great live band, put on a hell of a show at Limelight.
Bone Cellar - "Lost in the Light of Day" A completely forgotten Seattle indie punk (yes, grunge) band. It's not even a cult favorite...
