I need an audio pro's opinion on whether this amp will suffice for these loudspeakers. Basically, does the Cambridge have the power to get the full potential out of the D7's? I wish I knew how to interpret these specs, but I have to plead ignorance. :help:

    Cerwin Vega D7

    Freq Response---------25Hz-25KHz
    Power Handling---------5/200 Watts
    Sensitivity-------------98dB
    Impedance-------------8ohm
    Max Output at full Power-120dB
    Crossover Freq---------500Hz/3500Hz

    Cambridge Audio Integrated Amplifier

Power Output: 60 Watts into 8 Ohms
    90 Watts into 4 Ohms

    Input Impedance: 47k Ohms

Loudspeaker Impedance: 4 to 8 Ohms

    Line: 330mV

Phono (using optional phono stage): 1.75mV

Total Harmonic Distortion (into 8 Ohms 80% rated power): 0.002% THD (No weighting) @ 1kHz
    0.0015% THD (A weighted) @ 1kHz
    0.025% THD 20Hz-20kHz @ 10W

    Frequency Response: 5Hz to 50KHz +/- 1dB

    Bass: +/- 10dB @ 100Hz
    Treble: +/- 10dB @ 10kHz

Signal to Noise Ratio (No weighting): >85dB

Slew rate (into 8 ohms): >30V/uS

Those are efficient speakers, that amp should be OK with them.

    Huh.

    Those speakers look like this?

60 watts is fine for these small speakers with 7 inch woofers.

I don't trust those efficiency and bandwidth ratings.

I listen tested these speakers before I sold them, and they are of more "typical" efficiency.

My offhand guess is around 93 db or something like it.

And the roll-off start in the low-end is more like 45 Hz, and at 25 Hz I would guess be down around 8 to 10 db or more....

    Let's not get carried away..

They are nice little speakers, but don't always accept published specs at face value.

They are a bit optimistic in this case, I think.

These are perfectly "normal" performing speakers for their size and price range.

Looks like those are L7's. The D7 is from circa 87-88. I bought mine new in late '88. I swiped a pic from a craigslisting:

Thanks for your help, Barry. I used to run these with a 80s model Kenwood receiver and was satisfied with the sound, but that thing fritzed out on me years ago. I am trying to piece together a decent system and eventually replace the CV's, but they are going to have to suffice for now.

The Cambridge amp will work fine at typical volumes. It'll give them a bit smoother sound, so it's a definite improvement there too. Only if you like to really crank it up to dangerous levels (for your hearing) will that CA amp be a bit low powered as they have a protection circuit that does not allow them to get too hot. I really doubt that you could reach that point with these speakers though as they should get really loud, really quickly.

Hell, if the sensitivity of the CVs is really 98db, they should play loud powered by a 2 watt SET. The Cambridge should be way more than enough to run them.

    OK, that makes more sense.

    Oh.... OK.
