Helping a buddy set up his HT system. He has a Sony DVD player and I have the coaxial out to recevier. DTS dvds play but DTS cd's do not. The player is set DTS on and still white noise any suggestions?

What I would do is try an analog connection (RCAs from 5.1 decoder outs to 5.1 inputs on the receiver, or at least RCAs L/R) in addition to digital (coax).

Also, in the Sony's setup menu there should be two settings for handling the audio signal through the coax (Dolby Digital and PCM, afair); you can try both (remember to lower the volume on the receiver first).

    KLH recevier Sony(low-end) DVD.

Is the DTS CD a CD-R? Many older DVD players wouldn't play them.

I used both the original DTS CD and CD-R nothing......the player is less than a year old.

Does the receiver have the DTS insignia on it??

If not, then using it coaxial isn't gonna umm...work.

Sadly, if the reciever doesn't have the 6 analog RCA's for 5.1 input, yer not going to have the DTS badge on it either most likely....

IMHO, everyone should have at least a reciever that does DD & DTS for HT, if not a preamp and discreet amps, whatever...

Both the player and receiver have DTS logos and like I said the DTS works from DVD's not CD's. Very frustrating.....

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

I for one would wish to know what DTS titles are being used to test the system....very curious, in fact...

Does the rcvr have an "Auto Decode" or "Auto Decode Format (ADF)" mode?

I tried to play these DTS CDs
    Gaucho
    Band on the Run
    Venus and Mars
    Brand New Day
and a cdr of the Quad DSOTM in DTS
They all play on my Sony
I did not notice an "auto decode" on receiver but I manualy set it on coax.
The same thing happened a few months ago at another friends house.
He had a Sony dvd/sacd player and the DTS dvds played but not the DTS cds.
Is it possible that some Sony machines when it detects that the disc is a cd it "shuts" off the DTS stream??
    Does that make sense?
I will contact Sony and see if they have an answer.

I didn't want to sound goofy by posting that, but I was thinking the same thing.....weird cuz my friend has a really old Panasonic, and he puts in a DTS cd and it says on the read out..."DTS CD"....so you figure a more recent Sony would handle it no problem?!
