Well, I'm pretty sure "Pocahontas" is a studio recording as well. I recall hearing the basic track sans overdubs on a bootleg once.
Out Of The Blue and Thrasher on Rust Never Sleeps are live performances from the Boarding House. Ride My Llama is also live from the Boarding House, but with the addition of studio overdubs. Pocahontas however is a solo/acoustic studio recording (from Indigo) with added overdubs. Sail Away is a studio performance, as well. The electric songs are all live versions from the 1978 Crazy Horse tour, some with extensive studio overdubs. These are mostly completely different takes to those featured in the Rust Never Sleeps film, which are again different takes to those showcased on the Live Rust album. To my ears, the best performances and mixes are generally those from the film. Whether the acoustic versions of Powderfinger, Pocahontas etc from Hitchhiker are the same versions from Chrome Dreams is unclear. Recording at Indigo was a common occurence for Neil and Briggs, not a one-off; so it is entirely possible they are different takes.
I am on their mailing list but I have never ordered from them. I can only surmise from your comment that you do not find them reliable....
you asked why 'hitchiker' was not listed on amazon......i replied with a nonchalant whistle because how do we even know it if really exists? remember 'toast"
And am I right in assuming that "Campaigner' is the same take used on Decade--but with the extra verse included?
Really? I didnt know he played that song on the tour. Too bad it wasnt played on the filmed Live Rust gig in San francisco.
I don't know; whether any (or all) of the particular takes featured on Hitchhiker are those that would come to be regarded as "the master takes" is unclear. But what we do know is that Indigo was a favourite haunt of Neil and Briggs from the seventies through to the nineties. It wasn't a special event for them to drop by and record there, it was very much business as usual. So it's entirely possible that some individual songs were recorded multiple times at Indigo.
Pocahontas on Rust Never Sleeps is a solo studio recording with addded overdubs; this is for sure. The same version (minus the overdubs) can be heard on Chrome Dreams. Whether the version on Hitchhiker is the same raw performance again is unconfirmed.
Richard Kaplan, owner and engineer at Indigo studios said that Powderfinger, Pocahontas and Captain Kennedy were recorded in the same session. I think that all these takes were recorded on 11th August 1976. It's very likely that many other songs were recorded in other sessions at Indigo.
i don't want to say and i don't want to say no...all i can say is it's neil young, and when you have been a fan as long as i have you know that anything is possible, and anything can happen, and it usually does
It will be fantastic to have some of my favourite NY tunes - Campaigner, Pocahontas, Captain Kennedy, Ride My Llama - all collected in one place from one session. Plus unreleased material too (or at least there are titles there I don't recognise off the top of my head). I'm so excited about this. Just hope it materialises.
