Reminds me of the "Neil and the Youtube Indescretion" video when Neil was considering pulling "A Treasure" Back because Archives Guy released the video onto YouTube too early. I think that was the back story. Hopefully I'm not impugning the wrong guy!
When you think about it, it's quite hard to upload an album cover onto your website by accident. "Oooops, I must have leant on the wrong button". At the same time, leaking the cover in advance is a great way of building anticipation among fans. Removing the cover after a few hours only increases the effect.
I agree, but if you're familiar with the history of Neil's releases/almost-releases, it seems plans can change for any number of reasons, with or without explanation. The image was posted on Gary Burden's official website discography so its existence is more credible than a rumor. The content and release plans are all speculation of course.
I would genuinely take Ramada Inn over most songs in Neil's huge catalogue. Its a masterpiece for me and easily in his top ten. The lyrics are also very strong, and heart-breaking in its treatment of long term relationships and the impacts of alcohol. None of my business but I always wonder if this song isn't directly autobiographical in it's telling of the later years of his marriage.
It's more likely Ramada Inn was inspired by Neil's sideman Tim Drummond. Bearing in mind that all the other songs on Psychedelic Pill form a soundtrack to the book Waging Heavy Peace, written shortly before the album. Ramada Inn is the only one that goes without explicit reference in the book; until we get near the end, where Neil talks about the breakdown of Tim's marriage and his descent into alcoholism: "Something happened to him when he broke up with his wife, Inez. He gave up music. He has been drinking a lot and is in a wheelchair now....I wish he hadn't given up his music. Something in him just broke". Sound familiar?
Thanks for that. I read the book a couple of years back but didn't make the connection. Great song and also really looking forward to this Archive release.
Thanks. For some reason they sound more together musically with the visuals then just the audio (which I had already heard). In fact, given these five hadn't played togther at all for over a decade, they sounded very together for just a warm up. Putting the kibosh on the Springfield... Neil, you're sure "The Muse" isn't playing you?
Somebody took decision-making out of Bernard Flakey's hands and did something related to an upcoming release that actually follows the norm and makes sense. Can't have that in Flakeyland. Just a hunch.
It seems inconceivable that someone fairly close to Neil would inadvertantly disclose a new release by posting on their own website. Surely by now anyone who has any meaningful business relationship with the guy knows what to do and what not to do. Meanwhile, please, oh please, can he release Homegrown? Please??
You mean like he said he would in 2010 on his web site?Like Chrome Dreams,Oceanside/Countryside and Live At Budokan? The history of what has happened since the release of Volume 1 8 years ago is more frustrating then the 30 years of speculation and false starts leading up to that release. Free the Archives.
Albums that have been 'announced' in the last few years that have never appeared: Time Fades Away II Oceanside/Countryside Toast Odeon/Budokan Dume Homegrown Hitchhiker Was Chrome Dreams suggested as well? I agree, the talking needs to end and just put out an 'unreleased albums' box set on Vinyl AND cd. If he does 1 of these a year it would now take an additional 7 YEARS to get all these out, not to mention Chrome Dreams, Island In The Sun, Meadow Dusk etc... Neil does seem to have an issue with putting out unreleased studio albums. I've said it before, with all good intentions, his organisation is terrible. Put the stuff in an Archives box set and be done with it.
Don't get me wrong. I don't have any real hope for any of the "lost" albums to emerge, despite what has been said... ...at least, I didn't until the Hitchhiker artwork appeared.
I can understand Neil not releasing Meadow Dusk, seeing as it doesn't actually exist (aborted when Neil was dropped by Geffen), but hopefully the others listed will finally be released before too long. Bluenote Cafe in 2015 was a huge step forward.
most of those unreleased albums were said to be part of Archives Volume 2 so i never really expected them to appear separately before that was released.
Also the 1971 live album - I know the individual shows are out there now, but it would've been good to present this as an 'alternate reality' kind of thing.
Question re songs originally slated for Chrome Dreams and maybe another '70's album that didn't get released but ended up on Rust: If Chrome sees an Archives release, would it be the same versions of those songs?
No, there are studio recording of those songs. Probably all of them I'd imagine? Chrome Dreams has a studio take of 'Pocahontas', an acoustic 'Powderfinger' and a slower electric 'Sedan Delivery'. The versions of the songs on 'Rust Never Sleeps' are live recordings with the audience track wiped (apart from a bit of leakage here and there).
That would certainly have more appeal for me than the eventual Official Release Series with Trans, Everybody's Rockin' and Reactor... Neil Young Unreleased Albums Series has a nice ring to it...
The version of Pocahontas on Rust Never Sleeps is the same (studio) take as the Chrome Dreams one, but with overdubs. Songs like Hurricane, Will To Love and and Homegrown are the same takes that appear on American Stars 'n' Bars, but with minor differences in mastering. Esssentially, the same versions. For this reason, it's unlikely Chrome Dreams will receive a stand-alone release, as almost all the songs will appear on other specialised sections of the Archive.
