They're all good to great apart from:
    Are You Passionate
    Prairie Wind
    Storytone
    A Letter Home

    Sleeps With Angels
    Broken Arrow
    Silver and Gold
    Greendale
    Chrome Dreams 2
    Le Noise
    Psychedelic Pill
    Peace Trail
    Earth
    The Visitor
    are all exceptional albums.

    Living With War
    Fork In The Road
    Americana
    The Monsanto Years
are all albums that's have 2 or 3 classics on them but are very up and down.

I think every album has at least one or two gems on it.

I think his best album top to bottom of the last 25 years is still Sleeps With Angels.

Prairie Wind is a bit of a snoozer, but has a couple good cuts. Same with Silver & Gold.

I like Greendale but it's not one I've reached for in well over a decade.

I listened to Living With War quite a bit when it came out--Neil was fired up on that one.

Fork In The Road has a couple lovely cuts ("Off The Road"), as does Le Noise ("Angry World", but the production style of the whole album begins to grate on me).

Psych Pill has the amazing "Driftin' Back". I didn't have much use for Earth, The Visitor or Peace Trail (again--a good cut here and there on each).

Honestly, all the albums of the last several decades have been hit and miss. I took my favorite songs from each and made a big playlist.

Hitchhiker is great of course, but that's an archives release.

I love the vibe of the Dead Man soundtrack as well.

    My Playlist:

    1 Driftin' Back
    2 Off The Road
    3 Can't Stop Workin'
    4 Bandit
    5 Show Me
    6 Razor Love
    7 Trans Am
    8 Change Your Mind
    9 Devil's Sidewalk
    10 Act Of Love
    11 After The Garden
    12 Seed Justice
    13 Prime Of Life
    14 Angry World
    15 Scattered
    16 Ordinary People
    17 No Hidden Path
    18 Distant Camera
    19 Music Arcade
    20 It's A Dream

I struggled with it initially (especially after coming off of "Silver and Gold"), but once I treated the album as a Neil-in-character record a la "Everybody's Rockin'" I was able to find it mildly enjoyable.

Just my opinion, you don't like it, that's fine.

It's damn good, top 5 for me at least.

Hope they're planning a good vinyl reissue, original is scarce.

Man, as a guy who has been writing songs for 25 years, I cannot understand how "Prairie Wind" isn't everyone's favorite?

It's more acoustic, but the lyrical content is outstanding, as are the performances. I think they're some of Neil's very best songs of the past 25 years for sure.

I find it really strange that this record isn't listed more as one of Neil's best. I definitely think it is.

The title track and Two Old Friends are fine songs.

For me his essential albums since 2000 are
    Greendale
    Prairie Wind
    Le Noise
    Psychedelic Pill

Fork in the Road is a shocker
Chrome Dreams is good, worth buying for Ordinary People

Me, too, as in struggled. This is an album that I could insert in that thread that's on-going right now about whether you hang on to an album even if you don't like it.

I kept it because it was Neil. Was about to cull it when I listened to it one more time to make certain. And I found some gems. So I still have it.

Gotta say that I listened to "Greendale" and really liked it, especially "Carmichael". My favorite Neil music falls into two categories:
    1) lengthy guitar workouts ala "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Like A Hurricane"
    2) emotional, folky stuff like "Sugar Mountain" and "Needle & the Damage Done"

Also love Neil's darker music, like "Ambulance Blues"

    Hell....so much to love.

Thanks for everyone's input. I may just try to get his complete discography over the next few months, then dive in. Even if there are some clunkers in there, it may be all worth listening to.

Now we’re getting on a slippery slope toward “Actually, Are You Passionate? doesn’t really suck,” and I’m afraid that’s a bridge too far. It sucks.

:D No, it doesn't! If you're searching for Neil's nadir...Landing on Water. Now that is an album I won't speak up for.

Sleeps With Angels, without question. And if nothing else, it has "Piece of Crap."

Greendale is one of my all time favorites of his. I also love Fork in the Road, Peace Trail and Psychedelic Pill. Other good ones include Chrome Dreams II, Americana, the best parts of Prairie Wind, the best parts of The Visitor, and the best parts of Storytone. I love Broken Arrow and Sleeps With Angels but don't know if they are in the required period. I don't much like Silver & Gold. I objectively think Le Noise is great but I don't go to it much - although I can see that completely changing on the right day. But I think Greendale is up there with Zuma.
