Hello, I'm kinda new to this forum and I decided that I wanted to take a chance at making a thread on my favorite subgenre of music, which is Neo-Soul. In this thread we will discuss the subgenre as a whole, whether it's your favorite song, favorite album.. or maybe your favoite new discovery. :D

We have a Soul Revival thread that covers Daptone, Big Crown and a few other labels but I don't think it would be considered Neo-Soul ... that brings to mind D'Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu etc ...

I will say though that @djej has some great lists on the closed thread posted above. I found some new-to-me artists through his suggestions. Thanks djej.

I myself have to put D'Angelo at the top of my favorites.

And I'm always trying to turn people on to Myron Davis' last 2 albums Free and Myron & The Works. Those 2 albums are slept on big time and worthy of more notoriety.

His last album was one of my favorites of 2016. Before that I had never heard of him. Really strong album.

It was very good. The album prior to that one is awesome as well

Interesting. The vocals are not up front, which is what I hear in most Neo Soul. They are mixed down more like another instrument. Overall it works for me. Nice album for a chill out.

Myron & The Works (Meshell Ndegeocello on bass, Robert Glasper on keys, Charles Haynes on drums) may be even better than Free since I think it was all tracked live in the studio. Hard for me to choose. I love them both.

His debut album Destiny is good as well but it's more straightforward commercial late 90s R&B.

I got this over the weekend and had really high hopes since their last record Please Rewind was one of my favorite records of 2014. I have to say that at first listen I'm mildly disappointed, the songs don't grab me the way Please Rewind did, but I'm hoping it will grow on me.

So these are some albums I have really enjoyed and would myself consider them to be Neo-Soul. In any case I will be interested in others recommendations.

    • Raphael Saadiq- The Way I See It
    • Michael Kiwanuka - Home Again
    • Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate
    • Aloe Blacc - Good Things
    • Leon Bridges - Coming Home
Though I like and appreciate several artist on the Daptone label I do think of them as more of classic soul artists.

It was more a question for individual perspectives. Kind of going off the whole, "Erykah doesn't sound like D'Angelo, D'Angelo doesn't sound like Maxwell..." adage.

Although Myron Davis is his full name he goes simply by "Myron" which does make searches more difficult. And unfortunately Myron & The Works is a Japan-only release.

Thank you that helped. Myron & The Works is available but I'm not sure my curiosity is between $34 and $118.

I always just think of it as soul music for today.

I've never been a fan of the Daptone type stuff - that music has already been done.
