Beck's new collection Song Reader will be available only as sheet music. Seriously. The negative press reaction seems rooted in the insistance that he is releasing an "album," rather than a collection of songs intended for others to record and possibly upload to his label's website. So ... as Michael Nelson posited on Stereogum: is this a genuinely cool act of defiance in a musical landscape increasingly littered with disposable MP3s; or the most pretentious thing since [insert favorite artist stunt of self-indulgence]? Cheers!
