Is there something besides the limited edition packaging that I'm missing here? What accounts for the difference between purchasing 6 SACDs at $30 each ($180) versus the box set for $280?

That's how the LP box was. $50 each for the LPs at a totally of 6 or an extra $100 for the box.

You're not missing anything. They are even selling the box by itself for $100. Don't see a whole lot of value there.

Ironically, we will see a number of sets for sale in five years with mint SACDs and worn out boxes.

This forum. Ordered the lp box set last night. There goes one of my New Year's resolutions: no more impulse buying.

Can someone explain to me why I would want these if I already own the Perception Box? Mind you, I'm primarily interested in the 5.1 mixes.

Probably not much. The 5.1 mixes are the same.

    I pre-ordered mine back in Nov. 2011.

I know we're on an SACD kick right now, but I'm listening to my Strange Days LP right now and (same as the first) the bass is the most impressive part of these. Just...wow.

The bass and Densmore's drums really were what got me on the LP's. Then I started noticing other things in the recordings and was just swept up by the whole experience. All six vinyl releases are just outstanding IMO. I hope that the SACD releases make the listeners happy too.

$100 for THAT box and booklet?? This is, in my opinion, one of the worst money grabs of all time.

Well to be fair, AP claims they are not making any profit on the box - just breaking even, after the licensing fees.
So while it is a money grab (no doubt about that), AP is not the one doing the grabbing (or so they claim anyway).

Yes, they haven't been released on XRCD yet

I really don't need, and can't afford, these SACDs (have the DCC, AFs and the Perception Box) yet I find myself tempted nonetheless.

    So?

    ;)

I'm much more into stereo than surround sound, plus the SACDs use the original mixes for the stereo tracks. For those reasons, all of these SACDs are must-haves for me.

But (again), Didn't the DCC's use the original mixes?

Yes, they did. It will be interesting to see if the DCC/AF Gold CDs have better sound quality than the SACDs or not.
