Just saw this pop up this morning in my iTunes new releases and pre-0rders section. Can't find anything on it online, but it looks to be a live companion to the recent best-of that came out in honor of the 50th anniversary. Seems like it's four discs, and is (naturally) coming out on Rhino/Grateful Dead Productions on September 18.

    Here's the track listing:

Is this just the precursor to a mega "show-for-every-year" box set? [EDIT: IT IS! See Dave G.'s link in post #2.] How much of what's here has been previously released? Why is it called "30 Trips Around The Sun" when it has 31 tracks? Why did they choose what they chose, and not choose what they didn't? Let the questions/discussion begin!

Wish I could order only half of the box set (shows up to '81).

For the first time in my 11 years of collecting the Grateful Dead, I may have to pass on a new release. $700 is just a wee bit rich for my blood.

An ambitious box and certainly it will sell out. It's more than I'll pay though because I'm just not into the post-Godchaux years. Neat idea though and I bet the set is the bomb.

All the shows I know from that list are good ones, although there are only a few collectors don't have (4/25/77 only circulates in mediocre quality except from some shares on the Taper's Section). The 1990 selection is a bit of a surprise.

USB version contains all 30 shows in 24/96 FLAC. Finger is hovering over the preorder button...

Actually, even less than that since the package will likely include a significant number of other goodies. I just wish that they could have spread this out over two releases. While this is a good value on a per-disc basis, it's simply priced beyond many peoples' comfort zone due to the massive nature of this box.

So do they charge your credit card now or in September?

  13. Got it. If one wants to buy and spread over time then the old credit card is the way to go. Spread over two releases would be sort of like the two 1990 boxes and not a big 50 th anniversary release.

As much I adore The Dead, I can't quite swing 700 bucks. I'll buy the 4-disc release.

I feel so ashamed. But I pulled the trigger. No brainer for these physical limited edition releases

  19. Don't feel ashamed. If all else fails down the line you can get your money back. Just look at all the other GD sets that are reselling for way more than the original prices. Not to say anyone should buy to resell, but down the line you know the value will increase and if you need to, you most likely can.

I'm not sure if one song per year is the best way to appreciate the Dead...but it's probably pretty good...

On the GD website they indicate that individual shows will not be available on CD, but leave open the possibility that individual shows will be available via download. Personally I don't need to shell out for most of these, but the November 1967 material would be with having in the best possible quality.

Ooof. I know the quality will be fantastic...but for the first time ever, I'm thinking I may have "enough" Grateful Dead??

    That's a lot of $$.

Ordered! It's my Father's Day, Anniversary, Valentine's Day, Birthday, Christmas, Hanukkah, Just Because gift! I went with the HDCD but the 24/96 USB was mighty tempting.

P.S. Anybody wanna buy a kidney?

  25. I haven't been following, but how much are folks paying for the live final shows? Not the PPV but in person? I hear over $1000? Is this true? Personally at this point I'd rather pay for a set like this. But Ive seen the Dead around 30 times all from 69 to around 79.
