At this moment I am listing to the Coltrane box complete Atlantic recordings. Amp is NAD C350, CD player is cheep Sony CDP XE400, speakers are KLH model32. Could it be these oldschool speakers arn't as high end hissy, and help the music sound better?

On the other hand, same system with AR XA turntable. Spinning mint copy of Rubber Soul(mono),album sounds way different than anything in real life. comments or suggestions?

Coltrane's Atlantic recordings were usually produced by Tom Dowd. Does "My Favorite Things" sound dynamic but dry and does the piano sound flat and compressed a bit? Try the title track to Giant Steps... Sound very different? Does "Giant Steps" sound like Coltrane's blowing up your nostrils?
