But certainly by now everyone in the world who wants to HAS seen him, more than once even, and the entire globe should now tell him to never do all of the show bizzy Hey Jude singalongs again, and maybe then he'll feel he can dip into the catalog more. Each tour he switches out a few songs, however he should really break out an entirely new setlist for the whole show, he has the depth of material to choose from, no problem.;)[/QUOTE]

I think the world is bigger than you think.;) I would be shocked if the vast majority of the audiences at every show he plays isn't seeing him for the first time. That's why I don't blame him for his set lists. When you play in front of audiences that big, you have to play your best known songs. What I think would be cool is if he did a "Deep Cuts" mini tour at smaller venues for hardcore fans, and then release the audio from those shows on his web site for the fans who didn't get a chance to go.

I wonder how much of this is a reaction to his previously more humble musings. I read many an article in which McCartney played the "we were just a small band"/"I'm just an ordinary guy" card and, frankly, the journalists just weren't buying it. There was a certain sense of "the man is the greatest songwriter on earth, perhaps he should be honest in acknowledging it", and maybe he's tried to respond to it.

There's a dichotomy at work (which goes far wider than McCartney) in which we want our fans (and our friends) to be honest and truthful. But the honest truth is that we don't. Does anyone really want their friend to tell them their breath smells? My point is that we want honesty from McCartney but when he actually is honest we complain that he's "full of himself". So the man can't win. Lennon could happily get away with saying he was the greatest, or he was a genius or that the Beatles were the best band in the world because we seem to accept/expect it of him. Whereas, what the public liked about McCartney was that he was more humble. And yet, he'd also be called out for being disingenuous by refusing to accept his position in the R'n'R pantheon.

Perhaps he's reached a point where he doesn't care what people think anymore: he's going to tell people how he thinks and let them worry about it.

This speaks to a wider point about McCartney's relationship with the wider world: Lennon could write about cold turkey, peace, Yoko, his parents. And that was good. It was honest. McCartney could write about how he felt Every Night, how he felt about his wife, he could write about his lifestyle and what he yearned for (Heart of the Country) and yet that was all dismissed as being lightweight fluff. And yet it was as honest as any of Lennon's epithets. It just wasn't cool.

Yet again Paul H. nails it - spot on post in my view.

I always found his 'Average Person' persona slightly faked even though in many ways he lived as well as talked a good game (kids at local school etc), so I'd rather he gave it the big I am in some ways. He's Paul McCartney who else in popular music still alive has half the right he does to be full of himself!?

My big take away from the interview was NOT that McCartney was "full of himself". In fact, he refers to some of his own songs as "****" in an "aw shucks" kind of humble way. Not at all arrogant...and yet somehow some folks here read it that way and became quite upset. Even though, personally, I don't think that was his intention.

Not only that, there's a few people whose take away from the interview is that he was insulting Dylan.

My sympathy goes to McCartney! I can't imagine having every word I say being examined under a microscope.

This could be a separate thread:
Have the right: Bob Dylan, Little Richard, Neil Young, Chuck Berry, Brian Wilson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Pete Townshend, Keith Richard, Roger Waters, Ray Davies, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon
Think they have the right: Mike Love, Dave Clark, Madonna, Beyonce (even stealing McCartney's tour name), William Hung:hide:

Great, great interview. Can't remember the last time I said that for anything in Rolling Stone.

Especially loved the revisionist history answer - it absolutely has to be frustrating as hell to have blowhards telling you how things went down when you actually lived them yourself. The tragedy of Lennon's death had to make it impossible to really set the story straight, but it's nice that he's reached the point of (sort of) letting it go.

Just an aside but this brings back a memory of standing in line to buy Rubber Soul around Christmas of 1965 and also buying their new single We Can Work It Out backed with Day Tripper. Neither of these songs was on Rubber Soul. Other bands didn't do this. They needed the hit singles to sell the album.

Obviously could add many more, but do have to include Bruce in "Have a right".

Again, clearly (or I guess not so much) I was being purposely hyperbolic in a very lame attempt at mild humor. I have learned not to bother writing to amuse in the midst of a serious and long post. Only reaction I've got is from one stupid line in many paragraphs of contemplation.

At least I know a few people read it beyond the first line.

Perhaps the answer to the idea I was attempting to put forth and agree with is that in the large, major cities where Paul KNOWS he's already played numerous times he can whip out a deeper setlist, saving the carny one for the hinterlands.

Or will 'carny' be the only thing read and dissected in this reply?

You can't possibly be suggesting that shows within a major city are limited to an audience made up of the population within its city limits...or that the audience is just recycled. Folks that have been there, done that.

The deeper setlist, including smaller venues with a different focus, have been proposed within this thread. Several times. Without insulting those from the hinterlands and those who enjoy his current setlist. Of course, "carny" is the focus of your post! You created a separate paragraph just to highlight it.

Is "toilet book" a common British expression?
At first I thought he was saying that he thought the book was rubbish.

I thought he had no time (or interest) to read Beatles books. Maybe he reads these message boards as well? :)
