I just received Music Direct's 2002 catalogue. They're going to be releasing 3 Patrica Barber SACDs, Cafe'Blue, Modern Cool, and Nightclub.
Actually reading a little further it won't happen until Spring 2002 but there will be dual-layered SACD, new gold cds and new vinyl.
Har, har.... that's a good one Spring? We may as well start our own nasty little rumours then. Everytime you call Music Direct, ask them why the new MFSL closed down.
Good one Pigmode! Actually Patricia Barber is an excellent jazz singer/ pianist/ songwriter/ producer. Her Cafe' Blue album HDCD on First Impressions Music/Premonition Records gold cd is incredible, the best digital recording I've heard outside of a DCC a la Steve Hoffman, but you've sort of got to be in a relaxing mood with the girlfriend/ wife to appreciate her.
Any classic reissues from the new Mobile-Fi on either gold CD, LP, or SACD? I'll believe it when I see 'em! Til' then.....
Damn straight. I have been enjoying her "Nightclub" album (on 180gm LP) very much and am looking forward to buying the rest of her releases (also on LP, if I can swing it). I just saw her live a few weeks ago at the Regattabar in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA, and she was fantastic. Her piano and voice were complemented by an upright bass and a guitar, and it was a magical night. She did a cover of Joni Mitchell's "River" that brought tears to my eyes.
If I remember correctly, there are *no* plans to reissue old MoFi titles. I think Music Direct has said that all along...
I don't think that's what he meant. I think he meant "classic" titles as in stuff originally released in the 70s and earlier (or 80s, I suppose), not necessarily titles MFSL has already released in its previous incarnation(s). For example, those Patricia Barber titles mentioned are from '94, '98, and 2000.
Hmmm, the word at another board is that Patricia Barber is married to the owner of Music Direct. Don't know if it's true, but....it's not encouraging. No offense meant to the lady of course.
Pigmode Patricia Barber is not merried to the owner of Music Direct Jim Davis and his wife Bridget have been working with Barber and Premonition Records since Barber started recording (They are all from Chicago). These are all great Jazz albums. I was told that they started with these titles because as Steve has said, it took a lot longer to find good title from the big record companies. They were mastered them last month, so hopefully they will be out in January (for CES).
Regardless of what anyone thinks of Patricia Barber or the resurrection of MFSL under Music Direct, this can only be good news. Witness APO's SACD releases just announced under the Acoustic Sounds umbrella. We're all in for a treat, as I'm sure these PB titles won't be the last SACDs released by MFSL, and the OJC SACD's won't be the last by APO. It's a promising sign and great news for jazz/SACD fans.
I agree with GregM... Crawl, walk, run. As long as you get there....good luck to the new MOFI! [ December 03, 2001: Message edited by: Ben ]
If you're ever in Chicago, you can catch her trio at the Green Mill. [ December 03, 2001: Message edited by: Camarillo ]
