Huge McDonald fan. I enjoyed the first released track, but had the same knee-jerk reaction to the fake-sounding drums. I HATE the sound of programmed/sampled/quantized drums...yes, WENDEL included. But I'm willing to give the album a shot. If it's even half the quality of Blue Obsession, I'll be happy.

Shannon Forrest, IMO, is an uninspired drummer. He was the drummer on the second Dukes of September tour (and on the Lincoln Center DVD/Blu-ray release). Just...blah, IMO, especially compared to a Keith Carlock, who he just replaced in the current iteration of Toto, BTW.

Not sure why everyone's so obsessed with the drum sound on a Michael McDonald album.

This should probably be re-named as an appreciation thread.

Agreed! I personally don't give a crap about the backing musicians - as long as Michael is singing, he could be backed by a Casio and kazoo and I wouldn't care!

The album is now streaming on NPR. I'm not even sure why I'm bothering to post this here, since most of those posting here have made their mind up to hate anything except his "vintage" work. But whatever...

    Yikes 71 minutes. That's uh...ambitious?

Not crazy about the sequencing. First four tracks are slow to mid-tempo, but love that the last track is super up-tempo and not a ballad. Best songs for me are probably the three pre-release tracks plus Free A Man and a couple more. Beautiful Child isn't the Stevie Nicks song from Tusk, unfortunately. Ha. Good album. :righton:

I gave the album a good listen. It sounds very 1990's-I think it's the programmed drums and synth choices.

On first listen, I dug three tracks. Which three? Couldn't tell ya offhand.

This album will end up a perfect borrow from the library, that I will more than likely forget, about ten minutes after I listen to it, but I'm VERY happy for those of you who still feel that Michael has something worthy to say to you.

You probably won't find it at the library because I'll have already checked it out!

Funny, but I'm honestly the very first person at my local library, to have placed a pre-hold on Michael's new CD and there are currently five others after me.

Because he’s not crazy about what he’s heard...

I'm not a fan of listening to music online or downloading, I'm just old school and I'd rather have the disc in hand.

JD Ryznar (who played McDonald on the Yacht Rock series) has done a review of the new album, the first of an in-depth (dare I say Hoffman-forum-esque?) album-by-album reverse chronological series. He is really rooting for MM, but feels the production is thwarting him:

Blue Obsession was a worthy album that died without a whimper.
Tommy Sims was a great collaborator on the opening track:
