The b side is a live cover of Ramones' Judy Is A Punk.
There's a good fan made video of the A side on YouTube. It's a real grower - I like it more every time I hear it.

The new single is alright. I like the electric piano at the beggining, but the electronic sounds at the end seem out of place on a Morrissey song. I actually like the lyrics. Shutting yourself from the outside world and all its complications and annoying things is a tempting proposition although not a very realistic one.

Probably Morrissey likes the cover too because he named his label: Etienne

I listened to the songahain earlier today, just to give it the benefit of the doubt. But no, it's total bollocks. All that wasted time spent sing such basic repetitive shallow platitudes. It's heartbreaking really, given his pedigree in the early years.

    "Etienne" is French for "Steven".

I recall something about Alain wanting to bring guitars to record on his songs for the Years of Refusal sessions in 2008. He wasn't allowed, and that seemed to be it. Personally, I would have just continued sending demos and receiving the royalties for the songwriting credits, but I guess when you resurrected Morrissey's career twice (with the superb 1992 Your Arsenal and the 2004 comeback You are the Quarry) you expect a bit more.

    Agreed.

I didn't care for it much the first time, but absolutely love it now. I also didn't care for "Ask" or "Girlfriend In a Coma" or "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" or "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" first time I heard them, and that's to name a few.

Sure, "stop watching the news, because the news contrives to keep you in fear" is not as good as "last night the plans for a future war was all I saw on Channel 4," but it's much more direct, and I'm guessing there are many who can relate to what he's saying, even if it is simplistic.

Morrissey is in wonderful voice, and what's more, this sounds nothing like the vast majority of his recorded output. Better still, it stands head and shoulders above anything on the last album, which I still only half like.

    Color me cautiously optimistic.

So that's why I had seen pics with the kid winking.

I was shocked when I first saw the cover, but it has grown on me lol.

I don't see anything creepy about it anyway.

Do you mean Morrissey didn't want guitars on the record...?

BTW, You are the Quarry is essencial Morrissey to me. Several really fantastic songs. First of the Gang, I have forgiven Jesus, Let me kiss you, Irish Blood English Heart... Classics. And other great songs too.

Maybe it's because I mainly grew up in the 90's, but I find Morrissey to have more memorable songs than The Smiths. Maybe it's just having listened more to him first, who knows. But as I was saying above, I fins several songs in You are the Quarry as memorable as anything by The Smiths.

I can't put most of his solo stuff with The Smiths (I'm an 80s kid), BUT I totally agree with you about You Are The Quarry. I had kind of stopped following his solo career and when I heard that one, I was blown away. It's a classic, and the b-sides from that record are great too.

I have to say, this is the first Morrissey single in years that I've wanted to hear over and over again. Is there a 7" coming out for this?

Yes, there's a 7" coming with a cover of "Judy Is A Punk" on the b-side.

Covers make disappointing b-sides where Morrissey is concerned, but splendid news nevertheless.
