I have the new Mojo as I'm a subscriber and it came a few days ago. It's a really good 15 page spread on Ray and The Kinks, basically about his history with America from the start up to the present. Some recent pictures of Ray, he looks in pretty good shape.

The second album is vaguely mentioned, Ray says it will be 'looser', presumably compared to the upcoming release. Gary Louris also mentions the second album 'I think the second part all be even more diverse than the first, he's been adding to it all the time.'

Also, the free CD this month is a 14 track selection of Kinks covers, not many artists that's recognise, though includes the likes of Wreckless Eric, Chuck Prophet, Ty Segall,Gaz Coombs. Not had the chance to have a listen yet.

The Minnesota Star Tribune article suggests they are the only band on the album.

Yes, think that is the case, Ray's guitarist Bill Shanley also sounds like he was heavily involved in a lot of the arrangements and worked on the songs with the Jayhawks.

Finally, a new Ray record where I don't recognize the songs already! Other People's Lives and Workingman's Cafe are excellent. I have high hopes for this.

  7. I heard a song from the new album this morning on CBC radio. Definitely sounded like Ray Davies.

What a show it would be if The Jayhawks were the opening band, and Ray's backup!

The deluxe version of Workingman's Cafe included a DVD entitled: Americana: A Work In Progress, which had a song called Americana, but it is broken up in segments throughout, IIRC.

I'm presuming 'Americana' is the same song which was performed as part of the 'Storyteller' shows.

Well yes. I think you catch my drift though. It's not a duets album or a choir version of classic Kinks songs.

Haha, yes, but your post reminded me that I never got around to splicing together that Americana song!

Your post reminded me that I have that dvd and probably only watched it when I first bought it. I'll have to pop it in again sometime soon.

Pre-Ordered here. Loved both "Working Man's Cafe" and "Other Peoples Lives," and Jayhawks "Paging Mr Proust" was a highlight for me last year. Saw the Jayhawks in Dallas last October & they're coming back here in April. A dual show would be a "can't miss" for me.

I hate those remake / guest money grabbers. Especially following two excellent albums of new material that were up with the best in the previous 30 years.
