Well, Zappas creativity and musical ability exceeded those of Mr. Waters by several dimesions and if Zappa was picking up an idea from way back 25 years ago there has been heard a universe of new material in between. The comparison is IMO a bit misleading.

Sure, but we're working on Waters time here. Expect to see that 5.1 mix in 2025.

They will probably wait for everyone to buy the CD before releasing another version so we can all buy it again.

Good track! Don't get the comments about his vocals; you never heard Roger Waters sing before and expected vocal gymnastics? He sounds as good as on any other Waters record and he sells the song, which is what matters.

I wasn't expecting something so blatantly Cigarish.

Some of the folks who snipe at Waters for being "cynical" are amongst the most jaded, caustic and, yep, cynical that I've stumbled upon. Kinda suck the joy out of music.

Yeah, talk about unabashedly ripping yourself off! Still, I like it. It is practically Floydian pastiche, however. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Well, there's been a small universe of new material between 'Have a Cigar' and ' Smell the Roses' as well. And I was defending Waters in his referencing of older material because I feel his body of work, with and without Floyd, is also a whole. I agree Zappa had greater musical ability but that's beside the point here. IMHO.

We don’t need no Waters doubters
We don’t need no thought control
No dark criticism in the forums
Hey, cynics – leave us fans alone!
All and all, it’s just another post on the web
All in all, it’s just another pointless thread

Interesting to me anyways how on the new single that Waters alternates between the "sneering" Waters vocal vs the "old man vocal" (a la Amused to Death) withing the same verse.

The music reminds me of a mix between the Echoes jam section and Any Colour You Like (especially the early live version).

Yes but one of the great things about Waters writing is that he didn't really have the habit of repeating himself and of course both the context of his writing and the time elapsed in relation to his or indeed any audience puts him at danger of doing what I think he has done....

Would I rather he put out new music that offered something whatever that something might be...then yes I would but he has set his own standard....and great artist all struggle against that...when there are massive gaps in their output they are almost more tied to the past......

Whilst Gilmour's last record wasn't 100% perfect it did contain some interesting writing for me and as good a marriage of writing and music as there has been since Floyd's demise......maybe Roger's record will have a similar impact-we will need to hear the total thing rather than this snapshot.....

Sure, but Waters' conceptual continuity was always that, concepts. Like war, madness, the death of his father, etc. I always look forward to hearing his further takes on those, but this time he's set them to old music. Good or bad as his smattering of songs from the last 25 years have been, none of them were clones.
