Surely this must precede a new album in the very near future.

Though in Stone Roses timescales that probably means Autumn 2021!

I am holding my breath. I mean, there's a LOT of pure talent in this band.

Their 'comeback' was never anything more than a glorified nostalgic cash-in anyhow. One single after promising new material for nearly five years is pitiful.

Blur were kind of the same, took them six years to make another album after they reunited.

True, but they did release a few one-off singles in the interim. The Roses haven't done any such thing. And the resulting Blur album was fantastic.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this...I love the Roses, but they're a band whose hype and history far overshadows their actual musical output (which is paltry and, while really good, also vastly overrated in my opinion). I'll believe it when I hear it!

Cautiously optimistic is about right... Please don't let it suck!

But Blur never made a truly classic album, and their magic had long gone before then, so much less at stake. Their later stuff was OK, but not exceptional. The Stone Rose made one exceptional album and an exceptional 12" single - Fools Gold.

Blur only really have Tender that can compete with I want to be Adored or Resurrection - the rest are great disposable indie pop.

The grief they got after the rock plodder 'second coming' really makes this new release a high wire act.

While you guys complain about it taking so long, I choose to complain about all the people thinking the signage is for Beyoncé's Lemonade and being disappointed when finding out its the Stone Roses. :D

Ever heard of a little album called Parklife...?

Only so not "truly classic" that it was voted one of the top British albums of all time and put on a bloody postage stamp...

You are absolutely entitled to that opinion, but I can't agree with it.

It is a nice collection of ditties and some great pop songs, but it isn't a timeless classic of timeless tunes, more a collection of loosely connected pop.

This isn't an argument of Roses v Blur. Just a fact on their relative albums. Also Blur released a fair bit of filler in their time. The Roses only had the one album of filler.

To me, The Stones Roses album is more in the league Doolittle or Queen is Dead - complete albums.

That's OK. I have no idea who you are, so no need to agree with me. However if i was displaying 4 albums on my avatar, I wouldn't choose Flaming Pie as 25% - but happy for you to. Makes the world go round.

We'll have to agree to disagree...I find the debut to be a very good, but overrated album. Definitely a product of its time and the scene it came out in the midst of. The opening two or three tracks and the closing track are tremendous but for me, the middle of that album is pretty uneven and a bit throwaway. For years I reach for Second Coming over the debut when I want to listen to Roses.

Anyway, I'm warily looking forward to this new song.

Its all about time and place. I heard the Stones Roses very early on. Loved I want to be adored. And listened to pretty much nothing else during the Summer of 89. Then they started to hit the big time during that summer, and I sort of lost interest, went to University and preferred pixies, REM, shoe gaze. But the first album was such a key album, I guess my appreciation goes beyond the average.

The same for Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden. I also have a completely bonkers over-appreciation of that album, no matter what anybody else says.
