Slightly off topic: Reading about this track list and comparing to the Live Anthology set and other currently available live releases made me realize there doesn't seem to a be an official live version of "Change of Heart" anywhere. I think it's one of his great tracks that often slips through the cracks. After some more research, I discovered there was a live version recorded in Germany '82 that was released on a "Change of Heart" 12" promo vinyl . Is there any known way to get that track if you don't have access to a turntable? Also, has anyone heard said version or is there another official version I'm not finding somewhere?
- The live version of Change Of Heart is taken from a Rockpalast broadcast from December of 1982. It was filmed by Cameron Crowe and subsequently included on the "Playback" DVD. Please note it is NOT included on the "Playback" box set, it is a DVD exclusive! - "Little Bit Of Soul" from the 08-06-85 concert at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, California is available as the b-side to 12' version of "All Mixed Up" available here through discogs: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers* - All Mixed Up Edit: Here is the Rockpalast version of "Change of Heart" which was issued as the b-side to the "Change of Heart" single referenced above:
where are you getting the Wiltern information? The dialogue from Tom exactly matches the live version from the Pack up VHS concert.
BOOM! Cancelled UK order, booked this...and I got a further 10% Amazon Move discount, since I moved recently (even though I have no idea why Music would be covered under that discount...).
Thanks, @McCool. I knew that they had filmed the AOL Sessions there but the date threw me for a loop and I didn't even think of that as being the source! For TPHB fans, those sessions are notable for having the only live performances of "The Golden Rose" and "Flirting with Time."
If you have an American Express Blue Card, there is a program to have 20% off an order using points for any order sold by Amazon. I ordered $40 worth of CDs, got my 20% off plus my points; final cost was $16.26.
Check back and make sure you got the 4 disc version (not the 2). I notice they have all the versions under the link I sent and the used ones (probably the deluxe) are the expensive ones.
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Runnin' Down A Dream I remember pre ordering two of those sets in 2007. One for me, one for a friend. Time to pull mine back out, it feels like.
Your link got me excited thinking I might have that pressing with an almost 7 minute version of "Little Bit of Soul". After a little digging.. no luck. Link is U.K. Mine is the U.S. version with "All Mixed Up" on both sides. Once again ...a dollar short.
would love to see this though I'd prefer a chronological box, like a 4 or 5 cd with each disc representing a specific tour. don't need a complete single show - I'd take a best version of each song but presented roughly in the order of an individual show on each tour
They could take a lead from the bootleg anthology/compilation that is floating around. Although I quite like complete concerts as well, some of the radio broadcasts are/have been released 'officially' in the UK although most have been available unofficially for years.
It's nice to read that the Fillmore run from the '90s stands as a real possibility for a set of its own. It's like I've told you all before, I remember when I was down in Santa Clara for a 5 month spell in '96-'97 and reading the ton of press those shows got. Plus, they got great reviews to boot. I just wish I had known somebody who could have gone to one of the shows with me.
Good news for non UK fans, as the quality is decent, l thought it was just a loophole in UK law that allowed it but not really sure.
Tom's station on SiriusXM plays tons of selected unreleased multi track live recordings from the width and breadth of his touring career (even songs from what tragically became his final concert) and they sound great. With so many incredible nights and performances to draw from, you'd think they'd be able to release numerous volumes of live anthologies. Also, what about 2CD complete concert sets if they have particular shows which are deemed worthy?
I'd love to see a monthly live release (à la the Springsteen model). I would think there's definitely enough material to cover it.
Thanks. I was wondering more if in 1986 there were plans for a live release although of course Hard To Handle came out. There is always a chance I guess of a Dylan bootleg series containing some recordings with the Heartbreakers. Thanks for your input on this thread. I've learnt a lot more about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They have a far bigger archive than I would ever have imagined. Interesting about Southern Accents and Let Me Up originally being planned as double albums. One quick question. I have a hi res file from a friend of the Wildflowers album. I assume it is legit but cannot find this album available officially as a hi res download. Anyone any ideas where my high res file is from?
