New York Dolls: Personality Crisis Boxset
Formed in 1971 in New York City, and originally classified as hard rock, the New York Dolls became one of the creators of punk rock before there was even a term for it. With a line-up of vocalist David Johansen, guitarist Johnny Thunders, bassist Arthur Kane, guitarist Sylvain Sylvain and drummer Billy Murcia, the New York Dolls sported an androgynous wardrobe of high heels, eccentric hats, make-up and satin onstage, and in the words of the Encyclopedia of Popular Music were “one of the most influential rock bands of the last 20 years”, boasting such high profile fans as Morrissey, the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Kiss, Guns N’ Roses and The Damned.
It is commonly perceived that the essence of the New York Dolls was never satisfactorily captured by their two albums for the Mercury label, both of which many believe suffered from unsympathetic production. Fortunately for us all, the band’s untutored rawness, unencumbered strength of purpose and unique vision is better served by the recordings that are gathered together for the first time on Personality Crisis: Live Recordings & Studio Demos 1972-1975. A trio of pre-Mercury demo sessions – arguably as close as the Dolls ever got to nailing their sound in the cold austerity of the recording studio – are joined by a collection of incendiary live shows (including two American radio broadcasts) that, despite the variable sound quality, capture their unfettered outrageousness and life-affirming vitality. Yep. Same here as I already have the "From Here to Eternity"Live Bootleg Box Set" that came out in 2006 as well as the "Seven Day Weekend" demos comp from early 2000 on mp3. Only ones that are missing are the early comp.'s "Lipstick Killers/The Mercer Street Sessions 1972" w/Billy Murcia and "Actress-Birth of the Dolls", which I can obtain through Discogs and/or in mp3 format.

What are those tracks at the end of disc two? Those are not Dolls songs.

 

Del Bromham played guitar for Brit heavies Stray in the 70's. If it's the same guy, the 1979 recording date indicates, what, Johnny and Jerry doing backup work in England? Sounds really unlikely.

 

Major find if so, but yes sounds unlikely.

 

I don't have any of the live stuff, so I'll probably get this, especially because a bunch of those tracks on disc 5 are from the Hippodrome shows .

 

Those tracks are the same tracks listed for a Stray Live At the Marquee disc also to be released on Cherry Red Records on April 27th. Someone did a sloppy cut & paste job and dropped those tracks into the wrong album description.

New York Dolls: Personality Crisis Boxset

 

Those disc 5 "New York 1975" tracks look like the same ones on the Red Patent Leather release that's been issued a few times over the years. Not sure what can be done with the tin can sound in that case. Still, I'll pick this up, since I must have all things Dolls.

 

Wonder who owns this stuff these days? Syl or David?

 

Now if only there were tapes of the Television sets from those shows. I can only dream.

Those were the days. 1974/1975 the formative years for so many great bands from NY; NY Dolls, Television, Kiss, Ramones, Patti Smith, BOC. And you could see them all in small clubs any night of the week. Like the bagels, there must have been something in the water!

New York Dolls - From Here To Eternity, The Live Bootleg Box Set

 

Missing a few tracks compared to my copy of RPL. Not much here to tempt the collector and who else would sit through the dodgy live tapes its compiled? RPL and “Paris Le Trash”is all the live Dolls I need.

 

Haven’t been to the city in about 20 years. What the hell did they do to the real New York bagels that were started in the water then moved to the oven, and you could walk in to any one of the NYC or Brooklyn bagel shops at 8 AM and they’d still be warm . . . no more?!

 

I was thrilled to get the radio broadcast of the MICHIGAN PALACE, DETROIT, 31 DEC ‘73 show on the From Here To Eternity set.
Having been in the audience, I didn't get a chance to tape it!
