    Hi, my name is David.

I'm an AA regular. I just started lurking here yesterday and I must say that this site is the best I've ever seen for information on sound quality of different versions of releases.

I've read through the 20 most recent pages of archives and my head is spinning a little. I'm looking for advice on releases that represent good sonics to value ratio. A good example would be the BC-13 (which I have), which doesn't sound as good as mint y/b parlophones, but costs about 1/10 as much.

I'm a jazz bassist. Are there any jazz re-issues I HAVE to have? Most of the stuff I'm seeing I already have in one format or another. Are the DCC trane CDs (for instance) really that different than the "regular" CDs?

I'm also interested in any current releases that at their price are "no-brainers", any style, any format. Also, things that are available now at a good price and will be expensive later.

Lastly, here are some of my favorite artists, and I would love some recommendations on which releases (any format) are good value. Feel free to respond to one, none, or all of my questions.
    All feedback is much appreciated.

YES: Fragile, Album, CTT, etc (remasters vs. SACD vs. 180g vinyl vs. original vinyl)

Floyd: DSOTM (leaning toward 30th ann. vinyl, but maybe CD?)

Nick Drake: Entire catalog (have Island remaster CDs, considering Simply Vinyl and original LPs [yeah, they're expensive])

Beatles: What do you recommend to fill in the blanks that BC-13 leaves? I've got a few cds which mostly sound not good. Hoping the whole catalog goes to hi-rez soon.

Police: Entire catalog. ( I have all the original vinyl. Will the cd remaster, sacd, or new vinyl sound much better?)

Input on other great rock values also most welcome.

Hope this isn't too much to ask for a first post, but like I said, reply to as much or as little as you like.

    Much thanks in advance!

Only a true Audiophile would call it software. :) Welcome here!

Most of your questions have been answered and are floating around in the Music Corner archives, but I'm sure folks here will help you out with suggestions.

Thanks for filling out your equipment profile for us! Try and add your name to your signature line if you would. Keeps things informal here.

    Post often and long!

    Hello David and welcome aboard!

To your question about whether the DCC Coltrane, etc sound better than the regular releases...well...simply put; yes! You'll find a world of info and comparisons by using the forum search function. You should try to pick up a few and give them a try for yourself. Here's a site where I have found some titles for a very good price in the past including some Coltrane DCCs.

Music For A Song (Gold CDs)

Happy hunting and I look forward to hearing about your listening experiences.

BTW, what kind of jazz do you prefer playing the most?

Welcome to the Forum. A couple holes left by the BC-13 box are.
Collection of Beatles Oldies and the German version (HorZu or Apple) of Magical Mystery Tour. And IMO the US stereo Rubber Soul.

Nick Drake - You may find that the Simply Vinyl issues are the best purchased, and most Island originals are trashed or don't sound as good...

  9. :agree: What he said.

I finally picked up the EP box set on CD a couple of weeks ago. Sweet!

Yes, they are. Same with the DCC vinyl - much better than Coltrane OJC LPs. Might be (almost) as expensive as the originals these days though.

I have a copy of the US Rubber Soul as well, mostly for the false start on I'M LOOKING THROUGH YOU. Is there a particular vintage U.S. pressing that's best soundwise? I'd have to look, but I think mine has an orange or purple label. Some solid color. Thanks.

Soundwise I prefer the original rainbow label. But, that could just be me. I prefer the song sequencing of the US to the UK. UK version has a better sound.

    Welcome David.
Just what we need here, another Dave!

I think that all here would agree that any of the DCC CDs or LPs are a vast
improvement over the standard issue in every instance.
While I own all of the CDs, I prefer the vinyl. Unfortunately I made that decision a little late and the Jazz issues are getting hard to come by. I think that as a musician you'll enjoy the warmth and feeling of presence that Steve's mastering brings out in the jazz recordings.

Although it's hard to pick favorites here's a couple I listen to quite a bit:

Cannonball Adderley - Know What I Mean? GZS-1090
Wes Montgomery - So Much Guitar! GZS-1078
Stan Getz / Gerry Mulligan - Getz Meets Mulligan In Hi-Fi GZS-1074
John Coltrane with The Red Garland Trio - Traneing In GZS 1098

I think you'll like it here. You'll find a wealth of knowledge on music, recordings and equipment from friendly folks who are always ready to help.
Gee, it's just like Smallville here.

You may want to spend some time looking through the old posts, many of the titles you ask about have been discussed before. You can use the search feature to find them.

Maybe we should start numbering the Daves. What do you think?

Duke Ellington and Ray Brown - THIS ONE'S FOR BLANTON (Analogue Productions CAPJ 015)

This may be the most impressive jazz CD I own. It sounds amazing on anything, from my bedside JBL all-in-one box to mortgage-sized high-end systems. This out-of-print gold disc is hard to find but worth the search, especially for a jazz bassist!

Thanks for the warm welcome, fellas. I'm looking forward to participating.

BTW, I play primarily straight-ahead acoustic jazz, but love to play many styles as well including brazilian music, pop, punk, and whatever feels good.

Hope you enjoy visiting often (I know I do!) If you do not yet have "The Beatles Anthology" (both the CD and DVD incarnations), I strongly recommend them. Both are bursting with great Beatle moments that will become essesntial companions to your other Beatles material. Hope to read many posts from you!

Hi David! Welcome to Steve's. Kick your shoes off, grab an easy chair and post often.:)

Now to answer some of your questions...

Yes: Fragile Atlantic Gold CD (No other comes close IMHO even though there are some who will say the remaster is the same, I disagree)

Pink Floyd: DSOTM on CD the MFSL Ultradisc (Japan pressing), on vinyl according to a well known vinyl retailer named Tom Port (of dccblowout, formerly Better Records) there is a pressing of DSOTM MFSL Vinyl that leaves all others in the dust.

For The Beatles (flame suit on) the MFSL Vinyl is the best I've ever heard the Beatles sound, although a little reduction in the 10K region would have been better IMHO.

The Police...I wish I could be of more help here but IMHO for Syncronicity the MFSL Syncronicity Ultrasdisc (Japan pressing) is the best version. There have of course been recent releases of the Police catalog but I haven't heard them yet.

Just about every DCC Gold CD/Vinyl release is so far above any other pressing it's a life changing experience for most people. To get your feet wet perhaps you might want to try and get your hands on a copy of Nat King Cole: Greatest Hits. It won't be cheap....but well worth it IMHO
