"Star Trek" legend Nichelle Nichols has reportedly been diagnosed with dementia.

TMZ obtained documents filed in the 85-year-old's conservatorship in which Dr. Meena Makhijani, who specializes in osteopathic medicine, states that Nichelle has "moderate progressive dementia." Nichelle has been Dr. Makhijani's patient for several years.

Court documents also stated that the actress "has major impairment of her short-term memory and moderate impairment of understanding abstract concepts, sense of time, place and immediate recall," TMZ said.

That's really sad news. Dementia seems to be such a plague. I think that everyone here has someone close to them that is suffering from it.

Doesn't she still do conventions? I hope it isn't another Stan Lee situation and hope the best for her.

Mom had dementia way back when. This hits a little close to home.

She was at the Mad Monster Party in Charlotte either last year or the year before. I didn't meet her because I'm not a big Star Trek fan, but I'm sorry to hear this. It is a terrible thing to have.

I'm very saddened to hear of this. She's been such a vibrant and wonderful person for so long, to lose her this way hurts a lot.

She toured as a singer and dancer with Duke Ellington and one of his famous pieces was written for her. For that alone she deserves her acclaim.
Be at peace Nichelle, you are loved and admired. Think of all those little black girls you have inspired. So proud Dr King asked you to stay on Trek.

I'm saddened by this. My Mom is going through it now. In fact, she called me about 20 times this morning from her house asking me to take her to an imaginary house that doesn't exist because she thinks the imaginary place is her home. Just as with my Mom, I hope Nichelle doesn't have to go through this for very long and that she falls asleep one of these times and doesn't wake up. My Mom has been dealing with it for over a year. It changes you. Love and blessings to Nichelle.

Shepherdfan, hello. I'm sorry to hear about your mother and what's going on with her. I initially had decided to not mention this here, but just changed my mind. My father, may he rest in peace, suffered from dementia in the last few years of his life. The last few times I talked to him, he knew who I was, but in his mind, it was the early 1980s. He kept asking me if I had done my home work, chopped wood for our wood stove, and other, similar things. So, I know that this must be difficult for you. Or for anyone else who has a loved one who is in the same sort of situation, as well.

My grandma from my stepmom also dealt with dementia in her final years. I honestly didn’t even know for the longest time, my family kept me in the dark for a while, so I was left to think she was just kind of dingy.
