I'm a big Nick Cave fan. Despite that I almost never play his Grinderman albums. Strange, isn't it? When I need a more rockier Cave, I play always one of his Birthday Party albums. Especially his 'Prayers on Fire' which I dig a lot. Thanks to this thread I will however play the Grindermen albums at monday for another time for trying to like these better. PS: It's good you posted also these Grinderman albums; it's part of Cave's musical career. That's why it's pity you didn't post albums of The Birthday Party at the start of this long thread. For the people not knowing any album or songs of Cave's early post-punk band (and I found out: many don't do), here one of the best songs of the album 'Prayers on Fire' out of 1981: I said it before: this is really just like a James Brown song, a James Brown on speed
I guess I consider the Seeds and Grinderman as Cave projects, whereas The Birthday Party (to me at least) was a band he was in. I did post seven songs from the Birthday Party for people to check out, and I'm sure if they are interested they will look further
(I don't need you to) Set Me Free I have to say I am enjoying this bunch of songs. I had honestly never heard any of the Grinderman stuff and I am starting to get into the groove of what they are doing. I like the laid back feel of this songs and the cool groove they have going on here.
Honey Bee (lets fly to Mars) You can hear and feel a more relaxed atmosphere in these tracks from the band. The Bad Seeds burden would be a big one to carry, especially when consider things like the poll we just had. The Seeds had been so consistent over such a ridiculously long period of time, I can certainly see how the pressure to keep that up would lead to an escape from that, with a semi-anonymous new band.
Man In The Moon Probably the most Bad Seeds song here so far. It has that kind of atmosphere that has set the band apart from its peers. I like the melancholy sound and feel, and I think it works very well here.
When My Love Comes Down A nice primal song here. A lot of songs have a really good raw sound to them on this.
Love Bomb Another nice piece of garage punk/rock to finish out the album.... I probably need to get this at some point.
Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! Studio album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Released 3 March 2008 Recorded June–July 2007 Genre Alternative rock garage rock[1] Length 53:35 Label Mute ANTI- Producer Nick Launay Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds chronology The Abattoir Blues Tour (2007) Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! (2008) Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2008) Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is the fourteenth studio album by Australian alternative rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The album was recorded in June and July 2007 at The State of the Ark Studios in Richmond, London and mixed by Nick Launay at British Grove Studios in Chiswick, and was released on 3 March 2008. It would also be the last album to feature founding member Mick Harvey, who left the Bad Seeds in 2009, and the second without founding member Blixa Bargeld. Dig features the same personnel as the Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheusdouble album. It is also the first to be released since the Bad Seeds side project Grinderman released their eponymous album. In several interviews Cave has stated that this album would "sound like Grinderman", implying a garage rocksound. In line with this rough-and-ready approach, the album was recorded in about five days, an uncommonly short period for a full-length album.[2] Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! features artwork by British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster. On the band's official website Cave wrote about his inspiration for the album: Ever since I can remember hearing the Lazarus story, when I was a kid, you know, back in church, I was disturbed and worried by it. Traumatised, actually. We are all, of course, in awe of the greatest of Christ's miracles—raising a man from the dead—but I couldn't help but wonder how Lazarus felt about it. As a child it gave me the creeps, to be honest. I've taken Lazarus and stuck him in New York City, in order to give the song, a hip, contemporary feel. I was also thinking about Harry Houdini who spent a lot of his life trying to debunk the spiritualists who were cashing in on the bereaved. He believed there was nothing going on beyond the grave. He was the second greatest escapologist, Harry was, Lazarus, of course, being the greatest. I wanted to create a kind of vehicle, a medium, for Houdini to speak to us if he so desires, you know, from beyond the grave.[3] A series of viral video trailers for the album were produced by artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard. On 18 February the title track "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" was released as the first single—on CD, limited edition 7", and as a digital download—with "Accidents Will Happen" as the B-side. The second single, "More News From Nowhere", was released on 12 May. It draws its title from News from Nowhere, an 1890 utopian socialist novel by William Morris. An extended promotional video for "Night of the Lotus Eaters" was also released along with a live studio video of "Midnight Man" and a promotional video for "More News From Nowhere", all directed by artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard. The "More News From Nowhere" video released in May 2008, features cameo appearances by journalist Will Self, singer Beth Orton, British TV actors Karl Theobald, Michael Higgs and Caroline Catz plus British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster and socialite/ broadcaster Peaches Geldof. Critical response to Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! was overwhelmingly positive, with reviewers acclaiming the album as both a return to greatness and a new side of the band. The album currently holds a score of 87 out of 100 on the review aggregate site Metacritic, which indicates "universal acclaim".[4] A review from NME described Dig, Lazarus Dig!!! as a "gothic psycho-sexual apocalypse" and stated that "just when The Bad Seeds seemed content to settle into middle-age as a cabaret gospel showband – albeit an extraordinary one – they've bared their teeth again".[9] Stephen M. Deusner of Pitchfork stated that "this is how rock musicians are supposed to age".[10] Alastair McKay of Uncut wrote that "the band has never sounded better, and Cave seems to have relaxed into the hysteria of his vocal style; like Elmer Gantry singing Leonard Cohen at a tent-revival."[14] In his Consumer Guide column for MSN Music, Robert Christgau cited "We Call Upon the Author" and "More News from Nowhere" as highlights and called Cave "almost Dylanesque for blessed moments",[15] later giving the album a two-star honorable mention rating.[16] In a five-star review, The Observer's Graeme Thomson praised Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! as "a triumph from first to last".[17]David Harris of Tiny Mix Tapes said that "rock, country, blues, and post-punk rhythms meld with Cave’s lyrics on sex, death, God, and America to create what could be one of his most perfect albums yet",[18] while Matt Fink of Paste called the album "vintage Cave."[19] Jason Heller of The A.V. Club said that Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! "bears little concept or nuance, but it more than makes up for it in raw, oozing passion."[5] Hot Press critic Paul Nolan wrote that the album "is a less sonically abrasive affair than the album Cave released last year with his side-project Grinderman, but it teems with as many musical and lyrical ideas as ever."[20] Drowned in Sound noted that "while there are inevitable parallels what with one album following the last so soon", Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! was nonetheless "a bolder creation that its predecessor."[21] In a mixed review, Tim Perlich of Now wrote that the band's tendency "to revert to familiar structures and grooves" meant that it was "not surprising, then, that a number of the tunes on Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! sound familiar", though he acknowledged that "this probably isn't all that troubling to Bad Seeds fans, for whom more of the same is a welcome prospect."[22] In May 2008, the album was announced as the first nomination for Australian radio station Triple J's 2008 J Awards. The title track was ranked at 35 in the Triple J 2008 Hottest 100 Countdown.[23] 2008 MOJO Awards: Best Album of 2008 (Dig, Lazarus Dig!!!) 2008 ARIA Award: Nick Cave Best Male Artist of 2008 (for Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!) Certified Silver for UK sales.[24] Certified Gold for Irish sales.[25] Nick Cave – Vocals (1–11), Organ (1,2,6,7), Piano (3,8,9), Tambourine (3,5,11), Sleigh Bells (3,11), Toms (5), Harmonica (5), Electric Guitar (9), Vibra-Slap (11) Martyn P. I must say that it has grown on me substantially. I now find the lyrical approach to be quite enthralling and Cave really did do a great job at creating these stories. What are your feelings about this one here guy? Give us the low down Cheers
Dig Lazarus Dig I very much enjoy the vocal delivery here, it is a semi-spoken, sardonic collage of images that hold together as a story. To some degree you can here the grinderman influence in the structure of the song, which is back to a rough and ready rock mix, somewhat Doorsy in style and certainly worth the price of admission.
I liked DLD from the very beginning. It certainly has a Grinderman touch but nevertheless sounds quite different. I think it contains both elements from the noisier Grinderman garage sound and the more sophisticated Cave/Seeds style. It was a bit surprising for me that the album didn't receive some more votes in Mark's poll (it got mine) and i think DLD contains several exceptional nice tunes. The rocky opener Dig Lazarus Dig & the superb closer More News From Nowhere are excellent songs and both were released as singles. "It's getting strange in here yeah it gets stranger every year" Other favorites are Hold On To Yourself,Jesus Of The Moon,We Call Upon The Author and the brilliant Night Of The Lotus Eaters. A longer video version for Lotus Eaters was released on the More News From Nowhere CD. Shame they didn't use that long version on the album,it is great (see below). Yes and finally DLD was the last album with Mick Harvey who left the Bad Seeds a year later after working with Nick Cave for decades. "I suppose people are expecting me to say,Nick Cave's a..."
"NIGHT OF THE LOTUS EATERS is about apathy in the face of catastrophe. Why aren’t we running through the streets in a state of hysteria? I often wonder that. It surprises me that we are able to just sit around while some esteemed scientists say the apocalypse will have arrived in half a century." NC
yea i was surprised it didn't get more votes, but at least it didn't suffer nocturama's fate lol .... i can't believe kickin against the pricks beat it haha
Today's Lesson It has only really struck me while doing this, but there is a touch of a sixties vibe about this album. It is certainly not rooted in the sixties, but some of the sounds seem to be derived from/inspired by the sixties ... and it suits the songs and the band. This is a great song and tells its story well.
Moonland Another great song. Any song that starts "When I came up out of the meat locker, the city was gone ..." is going to leave an impression I would imagine. I like the storytelling style that is going on with this album, it is distinct from Cave's usual storytelling, but perhaps I'm not enough of a literature student to put my finger on exactly what it is.

Night Of The Lotus Eaters This song works at an attempt to hypnotise the listener. We have a repeated bass theme with sound effects floating around its atmosphere. Cave has an interesting lyric that seems somewhat to be about having given up the fight, yet defending oneself.
We Call Upon The Author Probably one of my favourites on the album, this is one of Cave's sprawling stories set to a turbulent musical soundscape, with a couple of unusual dance beat break downs, that are unusual but effective.
Hold On To Yourself Starting with a swirl of sound and then a very cool country surf guitar riff comes in. The violin soundscape is very effective behind the smooth guitars and then the clucking little organ riff works well. Another song that works really well for me. I find something about this song soothing.
B-Side for the Dig Lazarus Dig single. Contains some bizarre lyrics. I walk through the swinging door See my old girl Mabel Her jawbone hits the floor And her eyeballs roll around the table In a clever act of misdirection I manage with some finesse To scale the ladders in her stockings And creep into her dress
Lie Down Here And Be My Girl There was a return to guitar noise as effect on this album and it works very effectively .... especially when you consider Blixa was the one who had always added those textures to the earlier albums in the catalog. This is a good song moves along at a brisk step.
Jesus Of The Moon One of Cave's narrative lyrics, like the start of a novel. He is always very effective in this type of lyric and this song is no exception. An excellent song that musically seems like a transitional piece that somewhat links the earlier albums sounds to the albums that are to come.
Midnight Man Fantastic music on this track. This interaction of the guitars and keyboards here is pretty magic to my ears. The chorus has a kind of Spencer Davis group sound and works very well. Just another top class song on this top class album.
