I remember that series. One of the voice actors was Mickey Dolenz and the Funky Phantom (Wellington Muddlemore per Wikipedia) was voiced by Daws Butler. The series was one of a number that was patterned after "Scooby Doo, Where Are You?" (a group of kids with an unusual sidekick who solve mysteries). I had a story LP that featured the character (from a time when children's LPs based on animated series were released).

As far as nostalgia goes, this one has always stuck with me:

It was a segment that was part of a show called "Uncle Croc's Block" that starred Charles Nelson Reilly. "Fraidy Cat" had potential and I think much could have done with it.

Yes, as was "Lou Grant." BTW, Ed Asner holds a record for being the only performer to win an Emmy for Best Actor In A Comedy and an Emmy For Best Actor In A Drama for the same character (Lou Grant).

I didn't know that was why the series was taken off the air, but that wouldn't be a surprise. Another thing about the series were the intense story lines that still hold up today. In one story, the scientist who created 8Man had to choose between 8Man and his own son (who had been converted into a cyborg). The scientist is torn between choosing between his son (who turned on him) and 8Man (who he thought of as his true son). BTW, the series has been revived two times, once as a live-action movie that focuses on 8Man's torment over being a human mind trapped in an artificial body) and in an anime OAV.

One more from me, a terrific theme song:

It perfectly summarizes the character Mr. Magoo.

Was it the "Banana Splits" show that a mini-show that was sometimes (or always?) aired in the middle of the show?

I seem to remember the "show within a show" was called "Danger Island". It was shot on film, it was a serial thing where
the adventures would continue from each week to the next, and I want to say it even had its own theme song and title credits.

But I have no clue what the title credit song sounded like (maybe I need to check you tube!)

All I remember was it was something like a group of people on a boat are abducted and held captive by a strange band of
natives who wore loin clothes and were painted to look like skeletons. There was a character named "Chungo" - and if
you got him upset - things would happen - a la the Hulk... except the things that would happen were more on the goofy
scale than the rage scale... those bits always started with a yell of "Uh ! OH ! CHUNGO !!!!"

(no, I'm not making this up).

No, you are not making this up. One of the actors was a young Jan Michael Vincent.

Peewee' Playhouse. Something about the ending theme especially strikes that psychedelic nostalgic nerve ending.
