You really need to do an apprenticeship with Rex Reed. He's one of the world's leading authorities on negativity.... ;)

After reading the lukewarm to negative reviews, I had put off watching this film. Finally got around to it tonight, and was delightfully surprised by how well the story unfolded. Yes, it was derivative- but not to the point where it played like a pale clone (ahem) of something else. It generally worked- even the unfolding of how the characters came into the present, from their past. The visuals were stunning and the casting was effective (down to the Game of Thrones dude).
Not a waste of time, given the relative paucity of good sci-fi films, let alone big budget ones. I think this one may have a future. :)
(Then again, I liked Vanilla Sky).

    Steelbook BD is a beaut.

  15. I liked the movie--it was a throwback I. Some ways to 70's science fiction with state of the art visuals. A bit predictable but still enjoyable and Cruise gives a very good performance.

    It's even worst than Prometheus.
    And it wasn't easy...

  17. Worse? Yikes. I can think of dozens of science fiction flicks worse than both.

I enjoyed Prometheus. Was it flawed? Sure, but it had its moments and the plot holes tht people often complained about weren't plot holes just things left unexplained and due to scenes edited out of the final cut.

I think all the expectations surrounding both films tended to taint opinions on the films.

Did you enjoy Prometheus? Seriously? Oh, my...
After that, I watched Alien three times in a row...
But if you enjoyed it, well, good for you...

  19. Hey, what's not to enjoy? Much the same by the way was said about Blade Runner back when it was first released. I don't think Prometheus is on the same level mind you but once removed from all the hype it's an entertaining flick. Is it great? I don't think so as I think most of the narrative and thematic ideas weren't completely ironed out prior to shooting IMHO.

Part of the problem was the expectations created due to the buzz about the film before it opened.

Nope, part of the problem was the intention of making a prequel to Alien, one of the five greatest sci-fi movies e-v-e-r.
And the result has been a very boring series of hackneyed ideas, with no rhyme or reason, with just a few - I have to admit it - good landscapes.
I always LOVED Blade Runner, since when I watched it for the first time in 1982. Are you kidding?

Not to hash out a genre debate or anything but I've always considered Alien to be a suspense/horror film that just happens to take place in the future on a spaceship. Scott took a pulp horror story (inspired by It: The Terror From Beyond Space and a partial re-write of Dark Star) and turned it into a majestic masterpiece.

The problem I had with Prometheus is the goals were much loftier but Scott was unable this time to overcome the inconsistencies of the script, instead of inspired it felt ponderous. Beautifully looking film, but really hollow.

  22. Nope. Blade Runner was critically savaged by most of the media and a box office flop. I liked it as well in spite of the many flaws of the film when. Saw it in theaters in 1982 but it was generally not well received obtaining its cult and legendary appeal due to cable TV and home video viewings.

I have no problem with Scott making a prequel. While the questions not answered in Alien certainly didn't need to be answered, I think the ideas raised in Prometheus are worth exploring. Since the script originally began independently of Scott (as I recall) and more of an Alien vs. Predator type of flick (all of which are entertaining but basically pulpy crap IMHO), I suspect that the ideas that appealed to Scott was more of the Engineers aspect of the story. Even if he had wanted to jettison the Alien angle, I doubt Fox would have let him.

I think "Alien" is a great movie but don't feel Prometheus is an awful movie by any stretch of the imagination. Flawed, yes, but Scott has made worse films and many other acclaimed directors have as well. It doesn't taint Alien IMHO as that film stands on its own. Aliens and even Alien 3 have enough interesting material (with the first sequel being a stone cold classic) to keep the films interesting.

Back to Oblivion-- it's a terrific looking film and the story and characters are interesting. Unlike most science fiction films it actually dealt with themes and ideas that were interesting rather than being only about big explosions and actions scenes. They did a fine job of integrating the two IMHO.

    Of course. It's a suspense/horror/sci-fi film. :)

    And that is all about.

I understand your point of view, but I really can't see the beauty in Prometheus.
Theoretically speaking, I have no problem with Scott making a prequel too. And some ideas - you're right - were also worth exploring, no doubt. But I can't help thinking its realization is really hollow, just like Detuned says.
    IMHO, of course.

  24. I think it failed to live up to its potential a large degree but that's consistent with a problem inherent in almost all of Scott's films.

Spoiler !!! No probs with it, cept the Push da Button explosion ending.Surprised Hollywood did not make this in 3D ...stunning arial Fight scenes. 3D is popular in europe & Asia. China only wants 3D American Movies now. :)
