Actually, by now, 2 of the 3 members are deceased. Paul Minns died in 1997.

Had the LP of Alchemy in college - amazing music, unlike anything else at the time.

Yeah, but the sound is atrocious. Horrible remastering. Brickwall compression, no-noise...

    Avoid :thumbsdn:

The earlier CDs of Alchemy and MacBeth on Toshiba-Emi are much better. Not sure if they issued the s/t album, but I have the early BGO CD for that one and it's very good.

Catalog numbers are Macbeth TOCP-7371 and Alchemy TOCP-6796.

They can be tough to find but are out there. If you can't find them then even the Gott 2CD set is better than the horrible Japanese minis.

This is not new - it was reissued a while back by the Gott Discs label and now with all of it's catalogie transfer to BGO in was done by them.

    They sound great IMO.

That issue is much better than the Japanese minis but inferior to earlier releases. Some compression from what I recall. Go for early BGOs or the early Japanese pressings I cited above.

Or just grab vinyl. These albums aren't that pricey.

I like this one. It's completely different from the earlier albums. More of an electronic affair. In fact it fits in more with Krautrock than it does the earlier material.

Had their first LP in college. Another great release on the Harvest label - an amazing band and an amazing record label. Have Elements on CD, glad to know Alchemy is now available as a two-fer with Elements but wish I could buy it by itself, since I don't need two copies of Elements.

I like the fact that they not only did the music for Polanski's Macbeth but, you also get to see them performing in the film.

    Cheers,

I agree with Chris - the music in Polanskis version of the Scottish play are fittingly wyrd. The only vinyl item I own with TEB is the Harvest Heritage compilation from '76. It's a nice pressing if one doesen't want to spend a lot of dough for the originals.

I've been wondering about these guys since Makajodama's recent debut drew comparisons to them. Gonna check em out, thanks for all the links.

A few years back. there was an article in Mojo which chronicled one of the '60s venues popular at the time (I think that it was either The Roundhouse or UFO). They listed the bands that played each night and one band kept cropping up. They were called Giant Sun Trolley. I searched and searched for over two hours and finally found out that it was actually a group which would eventually become the Third Ear Band. Funny what you can learn if you are persistent!

    Cheers,
    Chris
