I'll be catching both of these Lisa! :righton: I miss this kind of variety programming as well. Tim Conway had me on the floor in hysterics many a time.

I'm the other way around. I will be glued to the Dick Van Dyke special, although I don't expect it to be a classic, given what I've read about it. I will skip the Carol Burnett. I've never been a big fan of hers, although I think that Harvey Korman and Tim Conway, together, are two of the funniest people on television. But, remember, I'm the guy who doesn't get Seinfeld or Frasier. Or Friends, for that matter.

(Again) I'm with Mark. I grew up on the DVD show, reruns in the afternoon on CBS after school at 3 around these parts. As for Carol, while I respect her talents, something about the whole emsemble there with Vicki Lawrence, Korman & Conway just makes me want to cringe. My mother loves it, but I have to turn away.

Love Korman as Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles, though! (Also, HOTW Part 1)

I may tune in to the Van Dyke show. I was looking forward to it, but the reviews I've read over the last few days have been nothing short of dismal, so it doesn't exactly sound like essential viewing.

I'll watch both even though the DVD Show has gotten terrible reviews.

I also loved Carol Burnett when but a youngster. Even though the self-conscious "crack-ups" got a lot of critical derision, I always like them, gave me a sense of fun about the show.

I may watch to see Rose Marie. I can't believe she's still alive!

I remember that! That WAS hilarious. Thanks for the link

Remember the soap opera parody "As The Stomach Turns"?

Harvey Korman (dressed as a fat woman, hired to get in touch with a dead relative): "I am a medium"

Carol Burnett: "Gee, I would have guessed an extra large"

I never cared for the Eunice bit that turned into "Mama's Family".

Don't forget the secretary: Miss a-Whiggens. :D I thought that one skit was called "Went With The Wind." Watching Harvey Korman try to keep a straight face is always a source of amusement for me. Always liked that show! Tim Conway now provides the voice for Barnacle Boy on Spongebob (Ernest Borgnine is Mermaid Man). I think it would have been funny if they'd gotten Harvey Korman instead. ;)

I wouldn't recognize the Dick Van Dyke show--we never watched it at our house.

In many ways these shows respectively represent the polar extremities of classic TV comedy: "DVD" was very much the prototype for the more sophisticated, adult-oriented sitcoms that came in its wake ("MTM", "Cheers", "Seinfeld", "Frasier"), while Burnett's show traded in broad, slapsticky sketch humor in the Milton Berle/Red Skelton tradition. Each a classic in its own way...

One thing you have to marvel at when you watch the Dick Van Dyke special is that not many actors would let themselves appear on screen the way they are now and allow a flashback of when they were young and glamorous. It takes a certain refreshing lack of ego to let that happen. I thought the show was pleasant; it's nice seeing Rob and Laura on the screen together. They could recite the phone book and I'd watch.

I enjoyed seeing the remaining cast together, even though the plot was hokey. IMO it should have been a two hour special with the actors reminiscing.

    Agreed!

All I'll say is, "You can't go home again."

I thought the show - especially when compared to the old clips sprinkled throughout - was really disappointing...

The show was all right; I wish it hadn't been opposite 24, however.

Notice that it was a "TV Land" production?!

  15. No thanks. :) I'm working various evening shifts this week and I'm already watching too much TV with the NHL playoffs, 24, and the Law & Order shows. It would have been midly amusing to see the Dick Van Dyke show however the VCR was set to record 24.

Both of these shows will make it down here, eventually. Can they recapture that magic - probably not; times have changed and the world has moved on.

Still worth watching though, just to reminisce.

Evan: That's why they make VCRs!! :) And, that's why I never read the 24 thread on here until I get around to watching the show a few days after it runs.

Heck, with young 'uns in the house, I don't think I've *ever* watched 24 at the time it aired. That's what Tivo was made for. ;)

I agree the plot line on "DVD Revisited" was terribly thin. The throws to the clips were choppy and with out context. And of course some network wag felt Ray Romano was needed to remind us how great DVD was. Not to mention the in your face plug for Ray's show by Van Dyke and Moore at the shows conclusion. I want to remember these folks as they were.

The Dick Van Dyke reunion was terrible. They should've just shown clips. The show sadly had no sense of humor w/ Morey and Sheldon deceased.
Mary Tyler Moore's facelift is scary!!! Her bod is pretty nice for a 70 year old.

I'm only into 15 min of the Carol Burnett show and it's so much better. It helps that everyone is still alive too!

I didn't catch the DVD show. I saw most of the Carol Burnett show last night and it was pretty enjoyable. Yes, it was mostly a "clips" show, but the on stage banter was frequently amusing, too, particularly Tim Conway and Vicki Lawrence.

I really enjoyed this nostalgia fest. Carol and the gang are like comfort food to me. My favorite clip was when Carol gave the 14 year old boy his first female thrill. And the "Maude" look-a-like was a show stopper. I also though the old clips with that 70's era CBS pastel color was a hoot. Norelco Plumbicon cameras I believe.

The Carol Burnett special was better than the DVD show. It was great seeing the clip from the first show. I remember that CBS had the best color broadcasts out of any network in the early-mid 70's.
