They didn't leave at the same time ... the band never stopped being a band during the changeover ... they evolved or devolved. I think it is different than bands reuniting without key members. I'm sure they lost plenty of fans when they stopped being country rock, and probably gained many more new fans. To me, they don't fit the criteria of the thread title.

I doubt Ben Orr would have cared one bit about him playing with CCR.
I liked the Cars album with Rundgren , it was pretty good. The comeback album was ok, but nothing to rave about. I would sooner Mr Easton be doing studio albums with CCR than the Cars.

And the "George Harrison" of the band, Matthew Fisher, who wrote some good songs, provided most of the classical influence, and occasionally gave us a break from Brooker's vocals. Not that Brooker's not a good singer, but the variety of a different voice is always welcome.

As long as you make sure the distinction between "Steppenwolf" the kickass rock band that had five members equally inputting and "John Kay and STeppenwolf" the cover act that has little resemblance to the once creative band called "Steppenwolf" is understood, yes indeed.

We seem to have missed one of the biggest, is Steely Dan still Steely Dan if Fagen & Becker are the only original members? Yes, because they remained the creative force through all their incarnations.

Blue Oyster Cult is down to 2 original members. As a huge fan I honestly say that the band, as a band, hasn't been the same since the Bouchard Brothers left and I haven't seen them since Alan Lanier passed but as a performing act, I wont miss them.

Sounds exactly the way I feel about The Who and September 9, 1978.

I saw "Buffalo Springfield" with Dewey & Bruce in the '80s. Thought it was a joke at the time, but in retrospect I'm really glad I saw those guys.

Ditto the "Mamas & the Papas" with John, Denny, Spanky McFarlane and MacKenzie Phillips (though that was surprisingly good).

It doesn't matter to me if it took the mormon tabernacle choir to replace him. What matters is if it jams. And CCR jams. JCF "performs".

I don't know about that.............. ever heard a Crazy Horse album? He didn't choose them to back him up without cause, Crazy Horse kicks ass without him. They are just icing on his cake. GOOOOOD icing. With roses on it and like that....

That makes sense actually. After all, they do have Clifford and Cooke. They were always a good rhythm section. They just couldn't find one guy who could sing AND play guitar like Fogerty. They do replicate the CCR sound quite well, but without Fogerty's songs, they wouldn't have much of a set list. It's a two-sided coin.

And without them, it is very likely nobody would know who John Fogerty is.
Interesting thing is, JCF tries to replicate the CCR sound and fails miserably, even with one of the most heralded drummers on the planet.

I agree with this in some cases, but I am thinking of studio albums. Badfinger put out Airwaves ans Say No More with just Joey Molland and Tom Evans as original members. I think Airwaves is actually a very solid album, Say No More isn't quite as good but has its moments. After Say No More was released Molland and Evans had a falling out and each of them got a band to back them and called themselves Badfinger. So it would be hard to say which one of them was the "real" Badfinger, when in truth neither on was.

And The Beach Boys put out That's Why God Made The Radio minus Carl and Dennis. I thought it was a pretty good album, considering the Boys aren't really boys anymore and missing the input from Carl and Dennis.

But on the other hand, it's hard for me to see Mike Love and Bruce Johnston and a bunch of back up muscians calling themselves The Beach Boys. I know Mike has liscenced the name, and has every right to use it, but I don't see them as The Beach Boys.

Yeah, I saw them live at the casino as part of a package deal when Rob Grill was on his deathbed and the band members were signing the jackets of vinyl LPs for fans after the show. Most fans didn't seem to notice or care and were happily allowing them to deface their albums. I told a man in line wearing a cowboy hat that the band contained no original members and he said loudly, "man that just ain't right!"

Anyone who's seen the new version of Paul Revere & The Raiders knows what I'm talking about. It should just be called Paul Revere, since there are no Raiders. Mark Lindsay puts on a great show, but I don't blame him for not wanting to be part of Paul's travesty.

The band is now literally Andrew Latimer and friends

None of the other 3 original members are in the band (of course Peter Bardens can't be back)

We go to a neat place(Wildwood Springs Lodge) in Steelville ,MO most every year to see the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.almost every year they also book the Little River Band in the fall. This year the price to see them is $76 for Fri and $110 on Sat including charges just for a ticket. I can not see how people are paying that kind of money to see a tribute band.....and I see a lot of their ticket options are sold......OUTRAGEOUS!!!

The situation with Steely Dan is unique. They stopped touring and quite literally became recording artists. So, the fanbase accepted them as Becker & Fagen with studio musicians and guests.

Even more considering that Lindsay is still putting out really good music on his own. Like last years Like Nothing That You've Seen. Pretty outstanding for a dude that is 72 years old
