So, my NAD T585 finally died. I need a good universal player that still plays DVD-A. I plan to use this for audio only, and my stereo only Rega pre only has analogue inputs for stereo...no HDMI. So, my question is, should I buy a new 105, or would a clean used 95 serve my purposes just fine based on my situation from a audio sound quality standpoint?
I could do that. But I see some 95's in the $600 range, so... Plus, if there is not much difference in the two units, audio wise for stereo only play...why waste the extra cash...but I just am not sure...
The 105 boasts "audiophile analog outputs" and better DACs, so it will most likely sound better. If you used HDMI, then I'd say go for the 95. However, the 105 has a headphone output and is fanless--the 95's fan noise is quite noticeable.
Look at the 105 thread here. The 105 has far more capability than the 95, being a media server to name the most significant and a better analog section. I've had both and the 105 is a more advanced piece of gear all round.
I got 7 years of trouble free service. I enjoyed it very much. But this weekend, it got "stuck" in standby mode. Tried for several days, but no luck. I still have an M55 that works great...
Same problem here, I believe the issue was a small daughter board that went bad. Eventually it even stopped working all together. Regards
As an aside, my 105 arrived last week...it's wonderful. Hard to believe what $1,200 buys you today compared to even 5 years ago. You have a lot to look forward to...
I had the 95 in my system several times and the fan noise was an issue for me as well. Good call going with the 105 especially with the fact there is no fan . Bill
Don't you find that the unit get a bit on the hot side though? I wish it had a sleep feature that would turn it off after a certain time. I like putting on a disc and falling asleep to it but don't like the fact that the 105 stays on all night and get hot. Any advice about this?
The 95 is also a media server and my understanding is that the analogue section is the same. The 105 can act as an external DAC and is fanless as has been pointed out. There are also differences with the HDMI input and some changes to the video section. If the primary use is for audio, there should be no difference.
The 95 should be fine. Have a look at the Oppo site to compare the two and see if you need the extra video capabilities and the use of an external DAC.
That is if the noise of the 95's fan will not be an issue. I had the 95 and it was in an open rack less than 7' from where I sit. I could easily hear the fan running when the music was not playing. It was an issue for me even with a well ventilated rack and using the pure audio mode as the fan ran quite often if not all the time. I now have the 103 and it's nice to not hear any fan noise. Bill
The analogue section is not the same and the capabilities of the 105 as a media server are far better then the 95. I've had both and the 105 is a more mature piece of gear. Whether or not people like one over the other is fine with me.
Well, the darn M55 just died. Same problem as the T585. Very irritating. Well, just ordered a second Oppo...
