I’ve been gobbling up these 5 CD (some 3 CD) original album series sets. It’s the best way to get 5 classic albums by an artist for under $20 (or $15) in brand new condition. So far, I’ve gotten dozens of these. The albums come in a single jacket mini LP packaging, which is very nice and aesthetically pleasing. Anyone else enjoying these? Also, does Universal or EMI offer a similar series? Or any cool independents?
I have been eyeing off a Judas Priest one of these... I noticed "bonus tracks" listed and assumed they are the jacked remasters, can anyone confirm if this is correct?
Not sure Re... Check the Amazon reviews, perhaps there’ll be info there. This is my original albums wishlist: Greenwich folk Mingus Ornette Rahshaan Roland Kirk Sarah Vaughan Curtis mayfield Jesus and Mary chain Aretha Everly Otis Redding both Duke Ellington Peter tosh Herbie Mann Elvis both Sonny Rollins Miles all four Johnny cash Glenn Gould Nina Simone Sony Louis armstrong Sam Cooke Between Warner and Sony there’s like 700 sets.
I've got a few and they vary in terms of quality. They usually utilize the most recent remasters of any given artist, so the quality depends mostly on that. Still, they are inexpensive, just not usually audiophile recordings. I've also noticed they seem to go out of print within a few years for whatever reason.
There are some similar packages from SPV (UFO, Sodom, Freedom call and Magnum had ones out) and Century Media (Dream Evil, Exodus, Agnostic Front, Redemption, Pain Of Salvation to name a few...). EMI have ones for P.I.L. and Megadeth amongst others. Obviously Sony and Warners are the leaders with these budget boxes and there are a lot of them out there...
I really like most of them, recently bought Spirit 5cd set (great albums, great quality) and Traffic 5cd (I like the sound of 4 of them, only Barleycorn album souds not so good. Think they didn't use the latest remasters). I have also sets form Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Otis Redding, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus - all of them sound very good to me.
For search purposes: EMI - 5 album set Universal - 5 classic albums (27 artists according to Discogs)
I have quite a few of these.......all great bargains: Traffic Free Graham Parker Kevin Ayers Jesus & Mary Chain Echo & The Bunnymen Be-Bop Deluxe Psychedelia Collection (Yardbirds, Idle Race, July, Tomorrow, The Gods) Yes Byrds Alice Cooper Dave Edmunds Sensational Alex Harvey Band
i am loving these sets. i don't like compiles, so for me it is an affordable way to get a good showing of some bands that i like. Some folks complain about the lack of info on the sleeves, but for me, i just want the music in album form and love this idea.
The ones I have are: Sony / BMG Sam Cooke (sounds fantastic) Jefferson Airplane Warners: The Hollies (Vols 1&2) Aretha Franklin (Vols 1&2 - Great collections. I love the sound of Spirit in the Dark in this set) Booker T & the MGs Donnie Hathaway Lou Reed The Monkees (excellent & has bonus tracks) Young Rascals Electric Prunes (I only like the first two albums. I can't stand the mass albums) Charles Mingus I'm very happy with them all, especially as original vinyl of a lot of these albums is hard to find in decent condition.
Hopefully they will release an Eddie Rabbitt Original Album Series box set. Although a number of his albums have been issued on CD in the past, most them are currently OOP and command large sums from collectors.
There is one of the Moody Blues with a mispressing: five albums, five different covers, five different cd prints, all five the same music: to our childrens children
EMI has the 2for1 classic albums series (at least those were still around in 2013 when I got the NWA set). Some used the remasters (like the NWA set), others - like the Blondie one - went for the original masterings. When you got one of these, it truly was a steal - 2 albums in their best/in very good redbook editions for ten bucks.
I have a few of these Tim Buckley The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Dr. John Electric Prunes Happy Mondays Randy Newman The Sisters of Mercy Psychedelia
I'm surprised they can think of any new ones (or new ones where the artist doesn't get grumpy: can't ever see a Neil Young one while he's alive).
Yes: conspicuous by its absence. Is there a Joni Mitchell one? I can't remember. In general, I prefer the Sonys, as the boxes are made of more substantial (and glossy) card: the Jeff Beck one (from Rough & Ready to Live) was the first one I bought and one of the first issued. It''s excellent. The Warners ones look cheaper (and are, generally, cheaper) but they do the job just as well. I've found that the masterings included varies - the Sony ones are generally the latest masters with bonus tracks, but the Warners seem to be the early 80s ones, without bonus tracks (cf: the Warren Zevon box).
No Joni Mitchell, but that's not surprising as she has a Studio Album box set in print. I should really get the Warren Zevon set as I only have the first two albums (secret US remasters plus the expanded and AF hybrid SACD Excitable Boy). I might check HMV tomorrow as they price match Amazon.
I've been buying these whenever I see them and they plug a hole in my collection. Great value! They've all sounded great to me but I don't claim to be a huge audiophile. I'. about 70% music lover and 30% audiophile. So far I've picked up: Bonzo Dog Band The Byrds (first 5 albums) Al Kooper New Riders Of The Purple Sage Terry Reid & Teenage Fanclub
