I'm reposting this from another thread. Anyone looking for an affordable, high-performance, moving-magnet cartridge might find this helpful. I know that many of us feel that when Shure discontinued the V15VxMR, they left some big shoes to fill.

Here's the test report of the original Ortofon 540 from the April 1989 issue of Stereo Review. I trimmed it down a little and italicized some things that caught my attention.

Although I haven't confirmed it myself with Ortofon, several people have claimed to have contacted Ortofon and that Ortofon confirmed that the original 540 and the MkII are identical.

The best price I've found so far for the 540MkII is $230 from William's Stylus Shop on eBay.

Here's another positive "mini review" from the Vinyl Asylum.
